Emmanuel Petit says Manchester United could be making a ‘big mistake’ should they qualify for the Champions League after which move away from Michael Carrick.
Carrick has done a remarkable job since taking on the reins from Ruben Amorim on an interim basis last month, steering United to 4 straight victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham.
Having been held to a 1-1 draw away to West Ham of their last contest, the Red Devils shall be eager to get back to winning ways after they return to motion at Everton next Monday night.
Carrick’s players seem like fiddling with a spring of their step once more and the impressive run since Amorim’s departure has seen the club rise to fourth within the Premier League table.
The extraordinary manner during which Carrick has managed to show United’s fortunes around so quickly has led to inevitable calls for the 44-year-old to be handed the position in a full-time capability at the top of the season.
That is despite the actual fact Carrick’s only previous role in everlasting management was with Championship outfit Middlesbrough, who made the choice to sack the ex-England midfielder last summer.
Recent reports emanating out of Old Trafford indicated that club bosses were leaning towards an external appointment, despite Carrick’s initial success, with Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti each highly regarded on the Theatre of Dreams.

Nonetheless, Tuchel would go on to commit his future to England until 2028 before Ancelotti also ruled himself out of the running by agreeing to a brand new take care of the Brazilian national team.
In response to Petit, though, United mustn’t even be considering other candidates at this stage when considering how Carrick has transformed the squad during his month-long reign in the recent seat.
‘Michael Carrick is a former player, he knows the club thoroughly, and I believe his link with the dressing room may be very essential. I believe the players appear to be happier with him,’ the ex-Arsenal, Chelsea and France midfielder told Ignition Casino.

‘I believe he probably understands something that Ruben Amorim didn’t. I believe he’s more flexible with the players, too. I believe his management has been different, each on and off the pitch, in comparison with Amorim.
‘That is something that at all times surprised me. Swiftly, there wasn’t an ideal tactical change, not likely. But we see different behaviour on the pitch and different results.
So, at the top of the day, it’s at all times in regards to the players. So, can he get the possibility to remain at Manchester United? I hope so.
I wish he would get the possibility because Manchester United has been spending a lot money on changing and sacking managers, a number of the biggest on their bench, for a similar results. And abruptly, a former player with not much experience at the very best level is doing job.’

Petit believes the situation mustn’t even be up for debate if Carrick manages to qualify United for next season’s Champions League.
‘Give him a likelihood. If Manchester United are back within the Champions League for next season and the board determine to let him go, that will be an enormous mistake,’ the 1998 World Cup winner added.
‘They’re changing managers too often. Whenever you get the possibility to have results, fans don’t care who’s on the bench, truthfully. That’s my opinion, especially nowadays when the manager has no power.’

Roy Keane has made no secret of his doubts about giving Carrick the everlasting job, insisting he mustn’t be appointed even when United by some means ‘win every game from now until the top of the season’.
But Petit insists the likes of Keane and Gary Neville must ‘give Carrick a likelihood’ to recommend his case given United have tried big-name managers with little success in recent times.
‘Gary Neville and Roy Keane don’t want Michael Carrick at Manchester United for next season, so who do they need on the bench?’ he said.
‘Perhaps they need Jose Mourinho to come back back, United have tried these big names.
‘I do not know who’s going to be the most effective manager for Manchester United. But for me, the most effective manager on the bench for any club is the one who gets results.
‘Currently, Carrick is having results. Why individuals are asking the query, I do not know. Give him a likelihood.’
