Alexis Mac Allister’s father has played down speculation linking the midfielder with Manchester United, insisting his son is ‘only excited about Liverpool’ at this stage of the season.

Strengthening Ruben Amorim’s misfiring attack was identified as United’s absolute priority last summer, with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko signing on the dotted line for a combined fee of around £200million.

And while Old Trafford bosses had also been keen to usher in a deep-lying midfielder to suit Amorim’s much-maligned 3-4-3 formation, the Portuguese was ultimately left disenchanted because the transfer deadline got here and went.

Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba have all been identified as potential targets and Brighton have since confirmed that the latter was the topic of an approach from the Red Devils.

The uncertainty over Amorim’s future – and his eventual dismissal – meant signing high-profile players was never a practical prospect in January. Nevertheless, with the team going from strength to strength under interim boss Michael Carrick, attentions are starting to show towards the summer transfer window.

A report from The Each day Mirror earlier this week suggested United had been ‘keeping close tabs’ on Mac Allister’s situation and were plotting an audacious move to prise the 27-year-old away from Anfield at the top of the season.

Though Mac Allister is contracted to Liverpool until 2028, there have been suggestions that the Argentine could have his head turned should the suitable opportunity present itself.

But when asked about these rumours, Mac Allister’s dad, Carlos, told winwin: ‘Alexis is just excited about Liverpool in the meanwhile.

‘We’re waiting for a proposal to renew his contract.

‘We are going to see what the club’s plan is.’

Pressed on whether his son may very well be coaxed away should an extension not be agreed, he replied: ‘We’ll wait and see what happens with the renewal. That’s all.’

Real Madrid have also been credited with a robust interest in Mac Allister in recent months, with Liverpool yet to satisfy the World Cup winner’s contract demands.

Talking to Liverpool’s official website earlier this month, Mac Allister revealed how a straightforward message from Slot helped steer the squad out of the rut they found themselves in after a wretched begin to the campaign.

‘The manager had a very good meeting where he said that we would have liked to enhance in each boxes,’ he said following Liverpool’s 4-1 victory at home Newcastle.

‘That’s what we wanted and I feel we showed it within the last two games.

‘We were more aggressive, we pressed just a little bit more, and we showed that “punch” that was missing.

‘It’s about being consistent now, which goes to be key.’

Mac Allister put in a robust performance on the weekend as Liverpool cruised to a snug 3-0 win over the midfielder’s club Brighton within the FA Cup fourth round.

Slot’s men learned that they shall be travelling to Wolves next month because the draw for the fifth round was made on Monday evening.
