India captain Suryakumar Yadav declared that his team will proceed to play ‘the identical brand of cricket’ with no change in intent after the heavy 76-run loss to South Africa in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 22).
South Africa, after being reduced to twenty for 3 inside 4 overs, recovered to post 187 for 7 in 20 overs. David Miller top-scored with 63 off 35 balls, while Dewald Brevis made 45 off 29 and Tristan Stubbs remained unbeaten on 44. Jasprit Bumrah returned figures of three for 15 in 4 overs and Arshdeep Singh took 2 for 28.
In reply, India slipped to 51 for five and couldn’t get well, getting bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs. Marco Jansen claimed 4 for 22, Keshav Maharaj picked up 3 for twenty-four and Corbin Bosch took 2 for 12. Shivam Dube scored 42 off 37 balls in a late charge that was too little, too late.
“I feel we were at all times in the sport after we began,” Suryakumar said within the post-match presentation ceremony. “I feel we bowled rather well at first, 21 for 3, and the way in which they batted after that from 7 to fifteen, I feel they batted rather well, after which we got here back again in the sport afterward. Overall, if we see, we bowled rather well, but we could have batted just a little higher. My thing is usually you’ve got to think, in case you’re chasing 180-185, you may’t win the sport within the powerplay, but you would possibly lose the sport within the powerplay. We lost too many wickets within the powerplay after which we couldn’t have small, small partnerships which we wanted for chasing 180-185, but that’s a part of the sport. We learn from it, we’ll sit back after which come back stronger,” he added.
The loss put the team on brink of an elimination within the Super-Eights round. One other defeat against either of Zimbabwe (on Thursday in Chennai) or West Indies (on March 1 in Mumbai) would mean that India would fail to make it to the semi-final despite starting as favorites.
Asked what changes would he wish to see, Suryakumar replied in a typically vague manner.
“Hopefully bat well, bowl well and field well,” he said, with a chuckle. “That’s it. We’ll attempt to keep it easy, play the identical brand of cricket which we wish to play and nothing changes. I feel we’ll come back strong.”
