AEW’s Darby Allin Recalls The First Time He Felt Scared During A Match

Throughout his AEW tenure, Darby Allin has developed a status for being a fearless, or crazy, performer, depending on one’s viewpoint. That is because Allin has pulled off among the wildest moments in AEW’s history, perhaps none wilder, or more controversial, than his swan dive off a ladder through a pane of glass at AEW Revolution 2024. But for all of the crazy things he’s done, Allin has seemingly been proof against fear, or at times even pain.

Because it seems though, there’s a minimum of been one moment that is left Allin worse for wear. Appearing on “Insight with Chris Van Vliet,” Allin revealed his Continental Classic match with Kevin Knight had been essentially the most painful match of his profession. Given Allin was out for several weeks after the match, that is sensible, though as Allin describes it, the moment he was injured was far tamer than a few of his more death defying stunts.

“It was a nothing within the grand scheme of things,” Allin said. “It was a backflip off the guardrail. As soon as I Coffin Dropped the guard rail and he jumped up, the guardrail sort of shifted, so I could not be in place right where I needed to be for the backflip. It just sort of moved once I Coffin Dropped into it, after which the knees barely caught me.

“And I remember, I felt my legs were giving out within the match, and I could not stand. And that happened also in the primary, like, three minutes of the match, so the remaining of the match, I’m like wrestling with these spaghetti legs. And I feel like I could not walk. And it was such a crazy feeling. After which I collapsed within the back and just puked in every single place.”

Allin Explains Why His Match With Kevin Knight Left Him Scared

Allin further admitted that he was in such a foul state through the Knight match that he actually allowed fear to creep into his mind.

“That was like, the primary time, in an actual match, that I used to be like ‘Dude, this is frightening,'” Allin said. “Cause it’s like live TV, and you’ll be able to’t even walk. There is a spot where I’m hitting the ropes in that match, to do a double clothesline as a double down, and I can not even hit the rope. I can barely stand. And I’m just considering ‘Oh my god. How did this occur? Like, this ain’t nothing in comparison with what I have been through…Not one time in those crazy moments I used to be scared.

“And on this moment, I used to be like ‘Oh my god.’ It just hit me. And it was terrifying, to the purpose I used to be like ‘Dude.’ Cause you hear all these stories concerning the head, and also you then think it’s only a snowball effect, you understand what I mean? And I don’t desire to consistently be like, I do not know what you call it, concussion prone, like once you have got one, it is easy to get one other. So after that one, I used to be like ‘I would like to simply screw off.'”

Allin revealed that he spent his recovery time in Iceland, hanging on the market for several weeks “at midnight,” which he believes ultimately was a giant profit for him. Nevertheless, the injury has done little to slow Allin down, and he’s continued his high risk style since returning in matches against Gabe Kidd, PAC, and Clark Connors.
