A marquee showdown had reportedly been mapped out for WrestleMania 42 well prematurely, in line with WWE sources.
Last night, it was reported that the working plan at one point called for Cody Rhodes to face Randy Orton on the grand stage.
Fightful was told as early as January that each Rhodes and Orton had been informed of the proposed WrestleMania 42 direction. Moreover, one source indicated that a key reason the championship was taken off Rhodes was to free him up for high-profile appearances within the 2026 Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber matches, boosting the appeal of each events.
As recently as last month, Orton vs. Rhodes remained the tentative plan for WrestleMania 42. That said, with creative direction ceaselessly shifting, there’s no guarantee the match will ultimately materialize.
