Ahead of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final match against England, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel backed struggling India opener Abhishek Sharma for doing well within the semi-final, stating that the necessary thing for the left-hander is to revisit his “feel good moments” and “start from zero”.

Speaking throughout the pre-match presser, Morkel said that sometimes, “The sport could be hard and cruel”, and Abhishek Sharma is facing something that fellow India opener Sanju Samson was facing a while ago. He also backed Abhishek to learn from it and are available out of this struggling phase as a greater player.

“I believe just sometimes this game could be hard on you, cruel on you. An identical situation that Sanju found himself in. In your profession, you’ll find moments like this. And this is nice growth for him, it is nice learning for him. For a young kind of guy finding his feet in international cricket, this can only help him down the road in Indian cricket,” he stated.

“He is just not a man who worries an excessive amount of about technique” – Morne Morkel on Abhishek Sharma

Morkel also stated that Abhishek Sharma needs a “one or two shots” to get back his rhythm and urged him to revisit his best times on the venue as well.

“He is just not a man who worries an excessive amount of about technique. Normally, those varieties of players take lots more time to get into confidence. So like I said, it’s a fresh page for him tomorrow. Opportunity to go and do well. Scored 100 here against England not too way back (last 12 months, a rating of 135, the very best rating by an Indian in T20Is). For him, it’s just tapping into those little videos and searching at his feel-good moments and constructing a blueprint and knowing he’s starting on zero tomorrow. It’s a brand new opportunity for him,” Morne Morkel concluded.
