Head coach Gautam Gambhir reiterated his belief that team trophies are more necessary than individual milestones after India clinched the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title with a decisive victory over Latest Zealand on the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Addressing the media following the triumph, Gambhir emphasised that the team culture during his tenure revolves around winning silverware quite than chasing individual achievements.
“My easy philosophy with Surya has at all times been that milestones don’t matter. It’s the trophies that matter. For too long in Indian cricket, we’ve spoken about milestones. And I hope that till I’m there, we’re not going to speak about milestones,” Gambhir was quoted as saying on the press conference.
Calling for a shift in how cricket achievements are celebrated, Gambhir said the main target should at all times remain on collective glory.
“Stop celebrating milestones, have a good time trophies. That’s going to be necessary because the larger purpose of a team sport is to win trophies, not rating individual runs. It has never mattered to me, and it would never matter to me,” he said.

Gambhir commended captain Suryakumar Yadav for his leadership and for sharing the identical philosophy about prioritising team success over personal records.
“Look, I’ve said it before, I feel Surya has made my life lots easier on this format. I feel he’s an outstanding leader. I feel, yes, he very rightly mentioned that he doesn’t wish to be called a captain, he desires to be called a frontrunner because a frontrunner is a far greater figure in a dressing room than a captain.”
The previous India opener highlighted the fearless batting displayed in the course of the tournament as an illustration of players prioritising the team’s success over personal milestones.
“You’ll be able to see it very easily as well. You’ll be able to see it within the last three games, what Sanju did. 97 not out, 89-88. Imagine in the event you had been playing for a milestone. Probably we wouldn’t have gotten to 50,” Gambhir stated.
Gambhir added that he considers himself fortunate to share the identical vision with Suryakumar, which has helped construct a powerful team culture.
“And I feel Surya has… Actually, I’ve been very fortunate that Surya and I were on the identical page, especially on this one,” he stated.
