Cody Garbrandt’s eventful UFC 326 fight left fans confused concerning the rules of MMA.
The previous bantamweight champion puked right into a bucket after taking two low blows on Saturday night.
Once he’d recovered, ‘No Love’ was allowed to proceed his fight with Xiao Long, whom he beat by unanimous decision due to two point deductions from referee Herb Dean.

John McCarthy says UFC 326 puke incident was handled perfectly
Soon after Cody Garbrandt‘s weird win, a snippet of the unified MMA rules went viral on social media.
It read: “If a fighter, through the course of a round, visibly loses control of bodily function (vomit, urine, feces), the fight shall be stopped by the referee, and the fighter shall lose the competition by a Technical Knockout (TKO) as a result of Medical Stoppage.
“Within the event a lack of bodily function occurs in the remainder period between rounds, the ringside physician shall be called in to guage if the combatant can proceed. If the combatant will not be cleared by the ringside physician to proceed, that combatant shall lose by a Technical Knockout (TKO) as a result of Medical Stoppage.”
Some UFC fans consider the rulebook dictates that Garbrandt should’ve lost by TKO for vomiting.
John McCarthy, who literally created the principles, has explained why Herb Dean was right to let the fight proceed.
“The Cody Garbrandt vomiting situation was handled beautifully by @HerbDeanMMA and the NSAC Ringside Physician,” the legendary referee tweeted on Sunday.
“Cody was fouled and a timeout was called by Herb. Cody has as much as 5 minutes to get well from the foul.
“A bucket was brought in for Cody based upon him feeling nauseous as a result of the foul. He did use the bucket, so it was imperative that the ringside physician at this point is controlling the physical activity and determining whether Cody can proceed or does the fight have to be stopped and decided by a Technical Decision based upon the fight being within the third round of a 3 round fight.
“The Ringside Physician allowed the fighter to proceed so Herb took away a degree from the fighter committing the foul and restarted the fight. If there was no foul and Cody had been hit by a legal blow that caused him to vomit, the fight would have been stopped by Herb as a TKO victory for Xiao.”
UFC 326 crowd convinced Cody Garbrandt to proceed
Cody Garbrandt credited the gang with giving him the energy to proceed fighting at UFC 326.
Most fighters would’ve accepted their night was over after literally throwing up within the Octagon, but he decided to fight through the pain against Xiao Long.
“Whenever you’ve got a crowd cheering ‘USA, USA’, you possibly can’t b—- out,” he told Full Send MMA.
“As painful because it was, I used to be spinning, throwing up, and didn’t even know the way much time was left in that round, but I got back to my feet with a rally from the gang.
“Then I got hit within the nuts again. I used to be like, ‘Ah, jeez, dude!’ I used to be just attempting to get my rhythm. It was only a weird fight. My mouth was so dry, and I didn’t know what was happening.”
