Rio Ferdinand revealed he contaced Paul Scholes after the Manchester United legend’s apparent dig at Michael Carrick within the wake of last week’s defeat at Newcastle.

The interim United boss has transformed the mood at Old Trafford since taking up from Ruben Amorim in January.

Inheriting a squad that was breaking unwanted records almost with each passing week, the Red Devils now look well set to qualify for the Champions League.

Despite overseeing an astonishing turnaround, United’s first major setback since his arrival saw Carrick receive what gave the impression to be stinging criticism from hi one-time midfield partner.

‘Michael has definitely got something special about him…cos Utd have been crap last 4 games,’ read a post that went live to tell the tale Instagram shortly after the ultimate whistle at St James’ Park.

‘Everyone was saying is Scholesy drunk has he had a couple of too many to drink, Ferdinand said when referring to the incident on his Rio Presents YouTube channel.

‘I actually texted him and said ‘what’s occurring?’ But Scholesy is Scholesy. He said ‘listen I said he’s special but we have now been rubbish the last 4 games’.

‘And he isn’t mistaken. We’ve been rubbish the last 4 games when it comes to performance. It hasn’t been top, I wouldn’t say rubbish. It hasn’t been oh my god I’m going to pay to observe that against next week, it’s been flat.

‘Individuals are going ‘I assumed he was his teammate, I assumed he’d support him a bit more. Did he have to say that?’ Those are obviously the questions individuals are asking if there a little bit of beef between them?

‘Listen, there’s not beef between them two. They’re two really placid, calm guys. Carra has the upmost respect for Scholesy and Scholesy the identical. It was just interpreted in a different way to the way in which Scholesy meant it to come back across.

‘He’s just being honest and brutal. One thing I’d say abouut him, he didn’t say much within the changing room but when he did it was normally a cutting comment so I’m not surprised he’s how he’s as a pundit at once.’

One other United player of that generation, Patrice Evra, meanwhile, couldn’t imagine Scholes had taken an easy opportunity to get on Carrick’s back.

Evra told Stake: ‘I hope Paul Scholes’ Instagram story is fake, I hope he was hacked.

‘To be honest, I’m not surprised at that from Scholesy. He was the quietest player I’ve ever played with in my entire profession. Now, within the media, he drops bombshells.

‘I actually don’t understand the shortage of support behind Michael Carrick, he’s certainly one of us and he’s doing thoroughly.

‘There’s been negative evaluation from Scholesy, but in addition from Roy Keane and Gary Neville. It annoys me because we would like to be in the highest 4, and people comments are unnecessary, but that is what you do while you work in TV. You possibly can’t be positive, you may have to be negative.

‘Most of those guys get a managerial job and get fired straightaway. I said to Neville: ‘It’s easy to speak on TV. While you were at Valencia, they asked you for paella, and also you gave them fish and chips’. After three months, they said goodbye.

‘People can’t forget what they’ve done as a manager. As players, they’re legends, but as managers, they haven’t done an ideal job. So for them to talk and possibly kill the profession of a manager, it’s slightly bit an excessive amount of.’
