In a sudden move, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to cancel its board and committee meetings in Doha on account of travel disruptions brought on by the tensions in West Asia.
Originally planned for March 25 to 27, the meetings were set to assemble ICC Board Directors, Chief Executives, committee members, and senior leaders to debate critical issues impacting global cricket today and in the longer term.
ESPNcricinfo reports that the ICC has not ruled out the opportunity of holding in-person meetings in April, contingent on the normalisation of regional airspace to make sure protected travel for participants.
Key agenda items for the meetings included the longer term of worldwide broadcast rights post-2027, initial discussions on the subsequent Future Tours Programme (FTP), and the qualification process for cricket on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
This Doha meeting would have been the primary time the ICC board convened in Qatar, a nation that has seen a remarkable 447 per cent increase in cricket participation since 2020. This surge is basically on account of efforts to introduce the game to latest and younger audiences, particularly through the Qatar Olympic Committee’s School Olympic Programme.
The continuing West Asian crisis can be impacting international cricket schedules. The limited-overs series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, scheduled from March 13 to 25 within the UAE, is now more likely to be postponed indefinitely.
Previously, an earlier series between Pakistan Shaheens and England Lions was also halted mid-way on account of the identical crisis.
