The favored IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings has landed in legal trouble after Sun TV Network filed a copyright infringement suit against the team over the alleged use of music from Tamil movies in a promotional video. The case was filed before the Madras High Court, where Sun TV accused the IPL team of using songs, background scores and dialogues from movies comparable to Jailer, Jailer 2 and Coolie without obtaining proper permission.
Jailer, Coolie Makers Sues Chennai Super Kings
Based on reports, the controversy began on March 1, when Chennai Super Kings released a promotional video across its official social media platforms to unveil its IPL 2026 jersey. The video reportedly featured music and dialogue snippets from the three movies, that are produced by Sun Pictures, the film production arm of Sun TV Network.
Sun TV claimed that it owns the copyright to the movies’ music and related audio content. The corporate argued that the IPL franchise used these elements in its promotional campaign without obtaining a licence, thereby violating copyright rules. The video was also reportedly used to advertise CSK merchandise, including the team’s recent jersey, which added industrial value to the promotional campaign.
Following the alleged unauthorised usage, Sun TV Network filed a civil suit against Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited and a few of its officials. The network has sought an injunction to stop the team from using songs, background scores or dialogues from its movies across any promotional material, including social media and stadium broadcasts.
CSK Sued By Sun TV In Madras High Court
The matter got here up for hearing before Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy on the Madras High Court. Throughout the proceedings, lawyers representing Sun TV informed the court that the network had already objected to the video and raised the difficulty with the franchise.
Throughout the hearing, Chennai Super Kings told the court that the songs from the movies had already been faraway from the promotional videos. The franchise also assured the court that it could not use the music again without obtaining the required licence from the copyright holders.
Reports also suggest that after the copyright objection was raised, the team removed the unique promo and re-uploaded the video with different music. The court has asked the franchise to file a proper affidavit confirming that the songs will not be used without permission, while the matter has been posted for further hearing.
The tracks in query belong to movies produced by Sun Pictures and have music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The soundtrack of Jailer, specifically, became extremely popular after the film’s release and has ceaselessly been utilized in stadiums and social media videos celebrating cricket moments.
