After giving Stranger Things a sendoff that included a brief theatrical run for the series finale, Netflix is headed back to cinemas for the subsequent iteration of the show.
Netflix is partnering with AMC Theatres to preview the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85. The show’s first two episodes (which have a complete run time of about 55 minutes) will play in select AMC cinemas on April 18, five days before the show’s full season debuts on Netflix.
The theatrical run for Tales From ‘85 is on a decidedly smaller scale than that of the Stranger Things series finale. The animated show’s preview could have two showings (noon and three p.m. local time) in 34 AMC theaters across 20 states (see the list here), plus the Netflix-run Paris Theater in Recent York and the Netflix House in Philadelphia, on April 18. The Stranger Things finale played in some 600 theaters nationwide (including about 200 AMC locations) on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, raking in an estimated $20 million-$25 million on the box office.
Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85 is about, because the title notes, within the winter of 1985, between seasons two and three of the major show’s timeline. “Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max have settled back into a standard lifetime of D&D, snowball fights, and quiet days,” the show’s logline reads. “But beneath the ice, something terrifying has woke up. Could or not it’s from the Upside Down? From the depths of Hawkins Lab? Or from some other place entirely? Our heroes must race to resolve this mystery and save Hawkins on this latest story set within the Stranger Things universe.” Eric Robles is the showrunner for Tales From ‘85 and executive produces with Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer.
Tickets for the Tales From ‘85 theatrical preview go on sale at 11 a.m. ET/8 p.m. PT March 18.
