The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is finally here and don’t fret, regardless that this text revolves around Shigeru Miyamoto squashing hopes for a Super Smash Bros. movie, there are not any spoilers here. Only stuff that has been revealed ahead of the sequel’s release, as on the time of typing this, I have never seen the Galaxy Movie yet.
Nintendo and Illumination made the surprising decision to disclose that Fox McCloud will probably be within the Galaxy Movie every week before it arrived in theaters. We were also told there will probably be Pikmin in there, too, and a clip showed us Mario interacting with ROB the Robot, a personality whose role within the movie is critical enough that he’s a part of a Galaxy Movie playset.
All Those Smash Bros. Characters, But No Smash Bros. Movie
There have been theories that the Galaxy Movie is perhaps putting the pieces in place for a Smash Bros. cinematic universe, and confirmation that Fox will probably be up there on the massive screen cemented those theories for a whole lot of you. Well, sorry everyone, however the man himself, Nintendo boss Miyamoto, has stepped up on day one in all the Galaxy Movie’s theatrical run to say no, that ain’t happening.
Despite Fox, and Pikmin, and ROB, “I do not think you will have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters can be joining [together in one film],” Miyamoto explained to Polygon. Those additional characters showing up on this latest Mario adaptation are simply a way “so as to add somewhat little bit of spice” to the film by means of what Miyamoto refers to as “secret cameos”.
The Fox cameo is not a secret, however the Nintendo head adds, “You may see that there is one secret character that plays an enormous role”. He actually could possibly be referring to Fox there, and he most probably is, but I’ll go ahead and set myself up for disappointment by assuming he’s referring to Kirby, despite every thing else he has said on this same interview.
Just play Kirby saying “poyo!” as Mario flies past a star-shaped planet. I do not even have to see him.
There Is No Nintendo Cinematic Universe Timeline On A Secret Whiteboard Somewhere
Illumination’s Chris Meledandri (that is the guy who appears in all of the Mario movie Directs) chipped in and explained the strategy of how non-Mario characters are added to the Mario movies. Meledandri explained that, every time a fan uses the term universe with regards to things like this, it conjures up images of individuals in secret meetings, slotting in pieces on a timeline wherever they could make sense.
That is not what happens with these movies. “It’s far more geared toward conversations about what can be fun inside a certain scene within the movie. If we agree that it’s a fun idea, then we glance to Miyamoto-san to only make his own judgment about whether or not it feels right to him,” Meledandri explained.
Mainly, if the team working on the flicks wants to incorporate a personality, they appear to Miyamoto for confirmation and advice on one of the best strategy to work that character into the project. Great news for anyone at Illumination who likes Pikmin, as Miyamoto reconfirmed that it’s mainly his life goal to get the little creatures into as many Nintendo projects as possible.
