The five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) haven’t won a single IPL title since 2020, and the top coach Mahela Jayawardene shared that having 10 teams within the league makes it tougher as well.
Addressing the media during a press conference ahead of the clash against Delhi Capitals, Jayawardene said, “I feel 10 teams make it a good harder competition. But I feel within the last five years, we were within the playoffs, if I’m not mistaken, two times. So which means we had our opportunities in only that last bit.”
Nonetheless, Mumbai Indians have didn’t qualify for the playoffs within the 2021, 2022 and 2024 seasons whereas they finished in fourth place within the 2023 and 2025 as well. In addition they ended at the underside of the points table within the 2022 and 2024 seasons.
“You may have to take one game at a time and undergo the processes. I feel as a team, we all know that we’ve done well consistently over a time frame. And we just must proceed to trust that process and keep playing good cricket. And we’ll get there. How we’ve been successful is by doing the identical thing. So I don’t see why we’d like to do something different,” again said Jaywardene.
“We wish to win it yearly if possible” – Mahela Jayawardene on IPL win
He also believes that Mumbai Indians players must have the winning attitude on and off the sphere and additionally they must be a greater team, and only then results will come.
“So long as we keep pushing ourselves to the limit on each game and have the identical attitude on and off the sphere to be a greater team, a greater franchise. I feel the outcomes will maintain themselves relatively than putting ourselves under pressure,” he further added.
“Starting of the season, saying we haven’t won it for five years. But there are some teams that haven’t won it ceaselessly as well, right? So I’m not rubbing it in. But with all due respect, we just thought that we’ll just trust our process and work on ourselves on how we’d like to go about it. We wish to win it yearly if possible, nevertheless it’s impossible. Teams are tougher; they’re higher. So we’d like to maintain fighting,” Mahela Jayawardene concluded.
