Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene applauded Rohit Sharma’s preparation ahead of their clash against Delhi Capitals within the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, stating that he had a transparent plan and vision to get himself ready for the league despite limited competitive cricket in recent months as well. In MI’s first game against Kolkata Knight Riders on the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit smashed a 38-ball 78 as well.
“Well, I believe credit to him, he had a plan and vision obviously. A number of of our guys who’re in our setup were involved on this training, and one among them desired to accomplish that. Also, to get to a fitness level that he was comfortable with, he knew what he needed to do. Despite the fact that he hasn’t played much competitive cricket, he did quite a little bit of skill work off-season at any time when he had the time. Then he joined us on our first day of the camp, and we had a chat on how we wanted to start out. We did lots of simulations and had quite a number of practice matches that we played. So he was a part of all that,” said Jayawardene within the pre-match press conference on Friday.
He also added that Rohit Sharma’s involvement in practice matches and simulations in the course of the camp helped him rather a lot to regain rhythm and be at his best in the primary match, which they won by six wickets.
“I mean, for somebody who has played the sport for such a protracted time, it’s within the veins, muscle memory, and the way he desired to go about. He’ll react a lot better on the market in the center in situations. Despite the fact that he didn’t have competitive cricket behind him, he knew that. I knew once I watched him batting within the nets that he was in pretty good nick. His hand speed was pretty good, and that was how he desired to approach. It was a very good start for him in the primary game, and hopefully, he can proceed that. I feel it’s a bit tough, the tournament. But he’s focused, he’s relaxed. He’s contributed in a really positive way within the camps, which was great for us,” added Jayawardene.
He further opined on how Rohit Sharma’s preparation was barely different in comparison with other Indian players like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Yadav, who were always playing for India as well.
“Well, I believe Jasprit, Hardik, Sky, and all that, they’re a part of the Indian set-up. Frequently, they play white-ball cricket and are under the NCA (BCCI Centre of Excellence, Bengaluru). They’ve been monitored throughout by them, and we get a handover before the IPL. Rohit probably was a bit different because he hadn’t played much cricket. So, he played in November (after which in January this yr in ODIs against Recent Zealand). After that, he spoke to them about what he desired to do with the fitness side of things. So, he took those two months to get his fitness right, after which he began doing skill work,” he stated.
“Because he was in Mumbai, we’ve got a facility there. So, he used that facility on and off when he could and wherever he desired to train. So, I believe Rohit is at that level, in order that he knows what he wants. So, I believe as a franchise, we won’t get entangled an excessive amount of because all year long, they’re with their national teams, many of the players,” he shared.
“It’s just the blokes who will not be with their national set-ups or the players who’re with their state teams and a few of them will not be playing cricket – then we’ll try of their free time, we’ll get them to a camp and do some skill work or whatever we’d like to do with them is how we get entangled with our entire squad. So, that’s the way it goes,” Mahela Jayawardene concluded.
