Abbott Elementary blindsided viewers with a shocking split.
Through the Wednesday, April 8, episode of the hit ABC series, Gregory (Tyler James Williams) and Janine (Quinta Brunson) argued over plans for an upcoming couples’ trip. Janine then broached the topic of a break up and while their decision wasn’t seen, Brunson confirmed off screen that the fictional couple have parted ways.
“Nobody saw it coming. I believe that’s an awesome time to throw a stone on the settled earth. It was something I thought of from the start of this season,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “They’ve been in a relationship for some time now, and we’ve seen them be really great and undergo the honeymoon phase, but I desired to get under the surface somewhat bit about what might be occurring with these characters and the way, in relationships, things like this occur.”
Brunson desired to tell a sensible story.
“We see it day-after-day — couples who look form of perfect from the skin. There will be things occurring in that we don’t learn about, that they discover inside their relationship,” she continued. “We talked about this rather a lot within the room about relationships and past relationships, current relationships, the way you never know. It might be this one little thing that leads you into an argument.”

The actress added: “This small thing was actually a catalyst for possibly some larger discussions that must occur between two people who find themselves attempting to spend loads of time with one another and possibly their lives together.”
While teasing the remaining of the season, Brunson addressed the possibilities of Janine finding love elsewhere.
“You will notice Dominic again before the tip of the season. We absolutely adore having Luke Tennie. He’s wonderful. He’s the hardest-working man in show business without delay. The boy is all over the place,” she shared. “It was so funny when he first showed up, he was like, ‘Yeah, I’m on The Pitt too.’ And I used to be like, ‘Rattling, you actually are working.’”
She concluded: “What’s crazy is we wrote the character of Dominic, and Luke auditioned, and the minute I saw his face, I barely needed to take a look at the audition tape. I used to be already an enormous fan of him on Shrinking. I knew that he would have what it took to tug this role off. He’s incredible to me. I opened his audition tape and was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t even know why I opened this.’”
Abbott Elementary airs on ABC Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET and is out there to stream on Hulu the subsequent day.
