Hamzah Sheeraz Targets Canelo After WBO Win

Hamzah Sheeraz captured the WBO super middleweight title on Saturday night, but his attention already appears fixed on the most important name within the division. The unbeaten British fighter made it clear after stopping 39-year-old Alem Begic that a future fight against Canelo Alvarez may be very much on his radar.

Sheeraz believes a fight against Canelo can be an honor even after the Mexican star’s loss to Terence Crawford last 12 months. He still views Alvarez as considered one of boxing’s elite names and someone value chasing at 168 kilos.

“I consider he’s considered one of the goats in boxing. So to share the ring with him can be an honor, and if I get the chance, I’ll definitely be getting the win of course,” said Hamzah following his win over Begic.

Sheeraz made those comments after saying he plans to gather more titles at super middleweight following his move up from 160 kilos.

“I’ll fight anyone. Listen, there was boxing royalty ringside tonight, and I’m attempting to follow of their footsteps. So, I’m just beating whoever’s put in front of me.

“So, I’m going to gather all of the belts and inshallah this time next 12 months you could possibly see Hamzah Sheeraz as a unified champion on the 168 division,” said Hamzah.

The trail toward a Sheeraz-Canelo fight could open quickly if Alvarez defeats Christian Mbilli on September 12 in Riyadh. A victory for Canelo would likely leave him holding the WBC title again, while Sheeraz now owns the WBO belt after Saturday’s win.

That may give Riyadh Season a ready-made unification fight between two marketable names at 168 kilos.

Sheeraz’s team already sounds fascinated about pushing the matchup. Manager Spencer Brown openly pointed toward Canelo after the fight while discussing the subsequent step for the newly crowned champion.

“We march on to the face of boxing Canelo,” said Brown.

“That’s the fight we would like.”

The timing may finally be lining up for Sheeraz. He has now scored back-to-back stoppage wins since moving as much as super middleweight, and his size and offensive style look like carrying higher at 168 than they did late in his middleweight run.

Canelo remains to be the larger star by a mile, but Riyadh has shown it’s willing to match younger, unbeaten fighters against established names if enough belts are involved. Sheeraz seemed Saturday night that he believes he’s already entering that conversation.
