None of us were there, to be honest, as much as we could,’ said Szoboszlai.

‘It’s a tough time but we’ve got to stay together. On Wednesday there may be one other likelihood [against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League], but we’ve got to get in our heads this shouldn’t be how we would really like the season to finish.’

When asked to elucidate the rationale behind Liverpool’s mentality, Szoboszlai replied: ‘That’s a superb query. I don’t know. It’s hard to search out words to be honest. We wanted this one a lot. You lose 4-0 at City and it’s not the most effective.

‘We had possibilities and missed them, we conceded a straightforward penalty. We lose 4-0. We cannot concede as much as we concede. Nothing else to say.

<img width="646" height="431" src="https://metro.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/SEI_292009499-9b9a.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=646" class="article-image wp-image-27857015" alt="MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - APRIL 04: Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool reacts towards booing fans following the Emirates FA Cup Quarter Final match between Manchester City and Liverpool on April 04, 2026 in Manchester, England. After 1-0 down, you continue to consider. At 2-0 down, it was our own fault to are available in at half-time conceding one other goal within the last minute. At 2-0, the chances are high lower and lower.

‘You come out and wish to point out we’re in a position to come back and also you concede a 3rd one. From then on there isn’t any more likelihood to return back.

‘We have now to forget as much as we are able to and as soon as we are able to and just carry on fighting on a regular basis.

‘I all the time say after we do it and we’re winning, after we don’t do it we’re losing. You have got to fight, work hard, be there for one another and that’s what we’re missing sometimes.’

When asked about Szoboszlai’s comments, Arne Slot said: ‘I should ask him what he means, what he means and what time period.

‘If he felt that was the entire game, I didn’t feel this until the moment they scored the 1-0. And I feel after they scored the 1-0, we were still in the sport. But then we had a throw-in, twice we conceded after we had a throw-in. And so they go so fast. In those moments you have got to defend sharper.

‘The second goal was the same one we conceded earlier on this season over here. And the second time that we concede just before half-time, playing Man City.

‘I miss the fighting spirit definitely in the primary 10 minutes after half-time after which afterwards it was only a game where each teams accepted it was 4-0.

‘But in that 10, quarter-hour of time, I missed fighting spirit but just the willingness to win your duel, to be there first, to make it difficult for either a pass or a cross or a finish. Yeah, that’s something that we definitely need to do higher on Wednesday.’

For more stories like this, check our sport page.

Follow Metro Sport for the most recent news on
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Arrow

<use xlink:href="#common-right-arrow" href="#common-right-arrow"></use>MORE: Gabriel Magalhaes injury update after Arsenal star limps off in FA Cup disaster

Arrow

<use xlink:href="#common-right-arrow" href="#common-right-arrow"></use>MORE: Arsenal star shoves referee in ‘disgraceful’ response during FA Cup defeat to Southampton

Arrow

<use xlink:href="#common-right-arrow" href="#common-right-arrow"></use>MORE: ‘So poor’ – Liverpool legend slams £34m star after Man City FA Cup loss

Comment now

<use xlink:href="#social-comment" href="#social-comment"></use>
Comments

Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google

<use xlink:href="#social-preferred-source" href="#social-preferred-source"></use>
Add as preferred source

Football Newsletter – In The Mixer

Punchy evaluation, transfer talk and more from Metro’s football experts, sent straight to your inbox every week.

Dominik Szoboszlai was seen shrugging at Liverpool fans after their FA Cup exit (Getty) Dominik Szoboszlai seemed to be unhappy with Liverpool’s supporters after their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City within the FA Cup on Saturday.
