An Angus Reid Institute survey<\/a> has found that half (51 per cent) of surveyed Canadians say Canada should provide aid to Cuba \u201cdespite the potential of further upsetting the U.S.-Canada relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three-in-10 (31 per cent) imagine Canada should avoid actions that will potentially further draw the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump, as \u201cmaintaining positive relations with the Trump administration must be more vital.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said he was considering a \u201cfriendly takeover\u201d of Cuba on Feb. 27, 2026, after the U.S. blockaded the island\u2019s foremost fuel supplier.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cuban government is talking with us, and so they\u2019re in a giant deal of trouble,\u201d Trump said as he left the White House for a visit to Texas. \u201cThey don’t have any money. They don’t have any anything without delay, but they\u2019re talking with us, and perhaps we\u2019ll have a friendly takeover of Cuba.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuba is in\u00a0the midst of a fuel shortage and humanitarian crisis, the newest in a few years of economic hardship. Trump effectively cut off oil shipments to the island by blockading\u00a0Venezuela\u00a0and threatening tariffs on any country that stepped in to fill the void.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t‘Canadians\u2019 awareness of the present crisis in Cuba is below average in comparison with many recent news events’\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Cuba\u2019s ambassador to Canada Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz said on Feb. 24 that the US is \u201csuffocating a complete people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe collective punishment of a complete nation is an unjustifiable crime. One may disagree with the country\u2019s political project, but there is no such thing as a right in any respect that justifies an amazing power \u2014 based on its economic and military might \u2014 interfering in its internal affairs, violating its independence,\u201d Diaz said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMuch less acceptable is a superpower attempting to attain its objectives by suffocating a complete people.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response,\u00a0Canada sent $8 million in food aid to Cuba.<\/p>\n

One-third (34 per cent) of surveyed Canadians imagine that’s enough support from Canada; with one-third (32 per cent) \u201cwant[ing] their country to do more to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was also one-in-five (19 per cent) who imagine Canada \u201cmust be doing lower than that or mustn’t have sent that aid in any respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

The survey also found that \u201cCanadians\u2019 awareness of the present crisis in Cuba is below average in comparison with many recent news events.\u201d<\/p>\n

Half of Canadians (51 per cent) say they’re following the story in Cuba \u201cvery closely\u201d (14 per cent) or \u201cclosely\u201d (38 per cent). One-third (36 per cent) say they’re scanning headlines.<\/p>\n
