German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Thursday he didn’t want U.S.-Iran war to position any further strain on relations between the US and its European NATO partners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don’t want \u2013 I don’t want \u2013 NATO to separate. NATO is a guarantor of our security, including and above all in Europe,\u201d he said, chatting with journalists.<\/p>\n

He added he had encouraged U.S. President Donald Trump in a call to pursue negotiations with Iran with urgency.<\/p>\n

Germany was resuming direct talks with Iranian leadership in Tehran, Merz said in Berlin.<\/p>\n

Merz said on Thursday that Germany has a fundamental interest in a diplomatic solution of the Middle East crisis.<\/p>\n

NATO\u00a0Secretary General Mark Rutte has briefed some capitals that Trump wants concrete commitments inside the subsequent few days for help securing the Strait of Hormuz, two European diplomats told Reuters on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Rutte\u00a0met with Trump<\/a>\u00a0in Washington on Wednesday, amid tensions inside the alliance over\u00a0the Iran war<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe note the frustration in Washington, but they didn’t seek the advice of allies either before or after starting this war,\u201d said one among the diplomats.<\/p>\n

\u201cNATO\u00a0as such wouldn’t play a job within the war against Iran, but allies wish to be helpful in searching for longer-term solutions for Hormuz. With negotiations ongoing with Iran, this may very well be helpful,\u201d the diplomat said.<\/p>\n

The U.S. president has repeatedly called\u00a0NATO\u00a0a \u201cpaper \u200btiger\u201d and threatened to withdraw from the 32-member transatlantic alliance in recent weeks, arguing that Washington\u2019s European allies have relied on U.S. security guarantees while providing inadequate support for the U.S.-Israeli bombing \u200bcampaign in Iran.<\/p>\n

Although Trump said on Tuesday the\u00a0attacks on Iran can be paused<\/a>\u00a0under a two-week ceasefire, the fallout from the conflict has continued to strain ties.<\/p>\n

Trump \u2060posted on Truth Social after the meeting in capitalized letters that \u201cNATO\u00a0wasn\u2019t there when we would have liked them, they usually won\u2019t be there if we want them again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dutchman Rutte, known in\u00a0Europe as a \u201cTrump whisperer\u201d and who has faced criticism for often praising the U.S. leader, said in an interview with CNN after Wednesday\u2019s meeting that Trump \u201cis clearly disenchanted with many\u00a0NATO\u00a0allies, and I can see his point.\u201d<\/p>\n
