Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n has conceded defeat after what he called a \u2018painful\u2019 election result.<\/p>\n

The loss ends 16 years in power for the powerful figure within the far-right movement allied with Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n

\u2018I congratulated the victorious party,\u2019 Orb\u00e1n told supporters in Budapest. <\/p>\n

\u2018We’re going to serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from opposition as well.\u2019<\/p>\n

Magyar says in a Facebook update that Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n called his team to congratulate them on their victory.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n had turned\u00a0Hungary\u00a0into what he calls an \u2018illiberal democracy\u2019,\u00a0declaring himself Europe\u2019s defender of Christian values against the specter of \u2018gender and LGBT ideology\u2019 and multiculturalism.<\/p>\n

In 2022, he said, \u2018We [Hungarians] should not a mixed race \u2026 and we are not looking for to turn into a mixed race\u2019.<\/p>\n

During his 16 years as prime minister, Orb\u00e1n launched harsh crackdowns on minority rights and media freedoms, erected razor wire on the southernborder and has been accused of siphoning large sums of cash into the coffers of his allied business elite, an allegation he denies.<\/p>\n

His government redefined marriage because the union between one man and one woman within the structure, and it has limited gay adoption and transgender rights.<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n also blocked a 90-billion-euro loan package from the EU to Kyiv to support Ukraine in its war against Russia\u2019s invasion, held regular meetings with Vladimir Putin and refused to finish Hungary\u2019s dependence on Russian oil and gas.<\/p>\n

He framed the Russia-Ukraine conflict as a alternative between war and peace, stating that Hungary won’t send soldiers, money, or weapons to the conflict \u2013 a stance which helps Putin.<\/p>\n

Recent revelations have shown a top member of his government regularly shared the contents of EU discussions with Moscow, raising accusations that Hungary was acting on Russia\u2019s behalf throughout the bloc.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Magyar broke away from Orb\u00e1n\u2019s ruling Fidesz party and have become a whistleblower-style critic of the federal government, accusing it of corruption and abuse of power.<\/p>\n

He prided his latest party on being pro-European and more focused on domestic issues like cost-of-living and standards of healthcare.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir \u200bStarmer said Magyar\u2019s victory was an \u2018historic moment, not just for Hungary, but for European democracy.\u2019<\/p>\n

Emmanuel Macron also hails the victory of democracy and \u2018for the Hungarian people\u2019s attachment to the values of the European Union and for Hungary[\u2019s place] in Europe.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Together, allow us to advance a more sovereign\u00a0Europe<\/a>, for the safety of our continent, our competitiveness, and our democracy,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n

Within the US lawmakers from the Democratic Party welcomed Orb\u00e1n\u2019s defeat, saying allies of President Donald Trump\u00a0in Congress are next.<\/p>\n

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz joined within the chorus of congratulations to Magyar in a web-based post: \u2018The Hungarian people have decided. My heartfelt congratulations in your electoral success,\u2019 he wrote in a post on X.<\/p>\n

\u2018I’m looking forward to working with you. Let\u2019s join forces for a robust, secure and, above all, united Europe.\u2019<\/p>\n
