Prolific director Steven Soderbergh<\/strong> has no beef with Adam Driver<\/strong>. The Oscar-winning director, who found success with the Ocean\u2019s<\/em> trilogy, was working on a movie featuring Ben Solo, a personality who played a outstanding role within the \u201cStar Wars\u201d sequel trilogy. Although the character supposedly died at the tip of 2019\u2019s \u201cThe Rise of Skywalker,\u201d the actor had an idea to bring the character back. After initially getting approval from Lucasfilm, the concept was scrapped by Disney heads, and the project is, in keeping with Soderbergh, officially dead.<\/p>\n

While promoting his latest movie, \u201cThe Christophers,\u201d Variety<\/a> couldn\u2019t pass up a probability to ask him about his canceled \u201cStar Wars\u201d film. After they asked him what he learned from attempting to get the movie made, he replied, \u201cThat there\u2019s no such thing as wasted time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was great to work on that with Adam Driver and [writers] Rebecca Blunt and Scott Burns,\u201d he continued. \u201cSometimes that\u2019s just the way in which things go. I do know what we got here up with was good. I feel it could have excited audiences. Working with smart people, trying to unravel sh-t, is the way you recuperate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within the interview, Soderbergh revealed that Driver \u201cfelt bad\u201d about involving him, only to see the project find yourself on the cutting-room floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdam felt bad for having gotten me into it. I feel he felt like he wasted my time, and I made it clear to him, \u2018Dude, that was not wasted time.\u2019 It\u2019s a problem-solving experience that can get applied to all the pieces I do going forward,\u201d Soderbergh said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not upset. I feel positive about all the pieces that we did together,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In a separate interview with\u00a0The Playlist<\/a>, Soderbergh confirmed that the movie was dead, saying, \u201cLook, if it was gonna occur, it could have happened.\u201d He also reiterated that he didn\u2019t feel that the project wasted his time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t regret one minute of the time we spent working on that,\u201d he explained. \u201cI felt the work was good. It\u2019s just good so that you can be in that room and dealing on it. It\u2019s like CrossFit \u2013 it\u2019s good for you. It\u2019ll have a residual effect that can be unexpected sooner or later.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon because it became apparent, OK, not gonna occur, I sat down and commenced writing [something else],\u201d Soderbergh said. \u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018OK, latest scenario, let\u2019s get cracking.\u2019 At a certain point, it\u2019s like complaining concerning the weather. You simply gotta keep moving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soderbergh Says The Story Idea Was Adam Driver\u2019s Idea<\/h2>\n

Even though it isn\u2019t clear exactly what the movie would have been about, Soderbergh revealed that the concept for the movie actually got here from the actor.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was strictly Adam saying, \u2018I feel there\u2019s still somewhere to go together with this character.\u2019 That\u2019s the way it began,\u201d Soderbergh revealed. \u201cOtherwise, I never in 1,000,000 years would have found myself in that universe again.\u201d<\/p>\n

But when asked if he would ever return to the project again, Soderbergh gave a quite simple: \u201cNope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steven Soderbergh Is \u2018Frustrated\u2019 Over The Film\u2019s Cancellation<\/h2>\n

This isn\u2019t the primary time that Soderbergh has addressed the film\u2019s cancellation. In a February 2026\u00a0interview with BK Mag<\/a>, the director said they were \u201call frustrated\u201d that the film was scrapped before they might even discuss a budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou recognize, that was two and a half years of free work for me and Adam and [writer] Rebecca Blunt,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhen Adam and I discussed him talking about it publicly, I said, \u2018Look, don’t editorialize or speculate concerning the why. Just say what happened, because all we all know is what happened.\u2019 The stated reason was, \u2018We don\u2019t think Ben Solo could possibly be alive.\u2019 And that was all we were told. And so there\u2019s nothing to do about it, you recognize, except move on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d sort of made the movie in my head, and just felt bad that no one else was going to get to see it,\u201d he continued. \u201cI assumed the conversation was strictly going to be a practical one\u2014where they go, what is that this going to cost? And I had a very good answer for that. But it surely never even got to that time. It\u2019s insane. We\u2019re all very disenchanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
