Disney+ has scored one other hit with the critics with the discharge of Maul: Shadow Lord on the streaming service. The series is a sequel to Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) and focuses on Darth Maul, a Sith lord first introduced in The Phantom Menace, whose role was subsequently expanded following his popularity.<\/p>\n

Maul: Shadow Lord Is A Critical Darling<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> has given Maul: Shadow Lord a 100 rating, meaning all of the critics on the aggregator website to date recommend the show. The critical consensus says:<\/p>\n

\u201cAn inspired look into the depths of an iconic character, Maul once more proves that through kinetic, vibrant, and interesting animation, the Star Wars saga can proceed in masterful spades.\u201d<\/p>\n

Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News<\/a> gave the series a glowing review, calling it \u201ca model of efficiency\u201d and praising the primary season\u2019s tight pacing without it sacrificing character development in the method. He called the show \u201cimmediately bingeable\u201d and regarded it even higher than a number of the Star Wars live-action movies.<\/p>\n

Amon Warmann of Empire magazine<\/a> praised each Maul: Shadow Lord and the sooner Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series for expanding on Darth Maul\u2019s character beyond the one-off villain he originally was in The Phantom Menace. He considered the choice to offer Maul his own show to be a \u201cselection that pays dividends\u201d. Warmann was also impressed with the dynamic Maul developed with the show\u2019s deuteragonist, Jedi Padawan Devon Izara.<\/p>\n

Rendy Jones of RogerEbert.com<\/a> also praised the show but was more skeptical of the Star Wars franchise\u2019s overall direction. While he praised the animation quality and its moment-to-moment pacing, he found Maul to be a shallow character and expressed concern that Dave Filoni\u2019s leadership of Lucasfilm might sideline daring storytelling in favor of pleasing the fanbase.<\/p>\n

Maul: Shadow Lord Plot<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Maul: Shadow Lord is the primary major Star Wars project to debut since Dave Filoni took over Lucasfilm and is a sequel to 2008\u2019s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, an animated series that Dave Filoni also helmed.<\/p>\n

The storyline follows Darth Maul and is about on the planet of Janix, which hasn\u2019t yet been occupied by the forces of the Galactic Empire. As a substitute, the planet is dominated by ruthless crime syndicates, including the Shadow Collective, which Maul is in command of. Nevertheless, Maul\u2019s ambitions go far beyond being a mere crime lord, as he seeks to regain his lost glory and take his vengeance on the individuals who\u2019ve wronged him.<\/p>\n

While feuding with the rival crime lord Looti Vario, Maul attacks Janix\u2019s local prison, where he comes across the dispossessed Jedi Padawan Devon Izara. Maul\u2019s encounter along with her convinces him that she could turn into a useful apprentice, and the remainder of the series focuses on developing their master-apprentice relationship.<\/p>\n
