The durable capabilities emerging within the AI era include output validation, data literacy, process understanding, and the flexibility to challenge automated recommendations. Tool-specific skills, in contrast, are likely to age quickly as models and interfaces evolve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI-ready isn&#8217;t defined by how many individuals took training or what number of licenses to procure,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.bestbuy.com\/our-leadership\/neal-sample\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neal Sample<\/a>, executive vp and chief digital and technology officer at electronics retailer Best Buy. \u201cIt\u2019s defined by whether you might have redesigned real workflows, assigned accountability, and might show the technology is improving outcomes without introducing unmanaged risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That shift \u2014 from tool proficiency to operational judgment \u2014 is forcing enterprises to rethink how they train employees for AI.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-illusion-of-ai-readiness\">The illusion of AI readiness<\/h2>\n<p>The primary wave of corporate AI training focused heavily on prompt engineering and basic familiarity with generative AI tools. That approach made sense early on, when employees needed help understanding the technology. But many organizations are discovering those skills have a brief half-life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrompt engineering aged the fastest,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/schalber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rebecca Schalber<\/a>, senior manager for generative AI at cosmetics company cosnova Beauty. As latest models and interfaces appear, the hassle invested in crafting perfect prompts quickly becomes obsolete.<\/p>\n<p>When cosnova rolled out generative AI across its workforce, Schalber expected training to center on individual capability \u2014 understanding large language models, learning prompting techniques, and experimenting with tools. Early adoption looked promising. Inside six months, a survey showed employees reporting productivity gains of nearly 10%.<\/p>\n<p>Adoption alone was not enough. \u201cYou wish broad adoption to maneuver the needle,\u201d Schalber said. \u201cBut what really matters is the workflow design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an alternative of specializing in prompts, cosnova began examining how work actually happens inside teams \u2014 what tasks employees perform, where friction exists, and which parts of a workflow might be safely automated or augmented by AI. Organizations deploying AI at scale must construct guardrails into workflows and clearly define who&#8217;s accountable for final decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor each AI-enabled workflow, you have to know who owns the choice, who handles exceptions, and where a human must intervene before the business takes motion,\u201d Sample said.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the challenge of AI readiness isn&#8217;t teaching employees to interact with a model \u2014 it\u2019s teaching them the right way to supervise it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"from-training-programs-to-workflow-design\">From training programs to workflow design<\/h2>\n<p>At cosnova, Schalber\u2019s team moved away from generic training sessions toward hands-on workshops where managers and employees map their day by day workflows. During these sessions, teams discover tasks that may gain advantage from AI support after which redesign processes around those opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>When AI was introduced as simply one other tool, enthusiasm was limited. But when employees saw how the technology could remove tedious tasks or reduce friction of their work, adoption accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not just one other tool that management wanted people to make use of,\u201d Schalber said. Bradley compares the method to teaching his daughter to ride a bicycle. \u201cThe easiest way for her to learn was to truly have her ride the bike,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>At Turing, employees experimented with AI through informal activities reminiscent of turning photos of pets into \u201croyal portraits\u201d or creating short AI-generated movies for internal competitions. The exercises were designed to lower the barrier to experimentation. Employees often discover that AI can function a sounding board for ideas, a drafting assistant, or a solution to speed up communication.<\/p>\n<p>Inside weeks, those experiments often evolve into more formal systems. The firm still runs formal programs but is expanding apprenticeship-style learning and weaving AI capability development into routine business activities.<\/p>\n<p>One example is the corporate\u2019s \u201cskills days,\u201d where employees explore AI applications relevant to their work. During a recent session with advisory associates, participants documented how they were already using AI \u2014 or where they planned to use it. A whole bunch of ideas emerged. PwC then used AI to research the inputs, clustering them into categories and redistributing the outcomes across the organization so teams could learn from each other.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, PwC pairs technical AI capabilities with what Burke calls \u201chuman edge\u201d skills, including critical pondering, independent judgment, and storytelling. \u201cWe never teach an AI technical skill without teaching the human skill that goes with it,\u201d Burke said.<\/p>\n<p>As AI systems generate more content and evaluation, those human capabilities change into essential for interpreting results, spotting errors, and explaining insights to colleagues and clients.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"measuring-real-ai-readiness\">Measuring real AI readiness<\/h2>\n<p>As organizations rethink AI capability, the metrics used to judge training programs are changing. Traditional learning programs often rely on target completion rates or certifications. But those metrics reveal little about whether employees can use AI responsibly inside real workflows.<\/p>\n<p>As an alternative, organizations are on the lookout for operational signals. Some track how regularly employees develop latest AI use cases that improve productivity or decision-making. Others measure how quickly teams adapt when AI tools or models change.<\/p>\n<p>For Bradley at Turing, the important thing indicator is whether or not employees continually find latest ways to enhance their work with AI. \u201cIf my team members come to me every week with ideas for improving or expanding AI use cases, that\u2019s the signal that capability is growing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>From the CIO perspective, nevertheless, the last word measure is operational outcomes.
