Prince Harry has made a direct appeal to Vladimir Putin to finish the conflict and \u2018select a unique course\u2019 during surprise visit to Ukraine today.<\/p>\n
The Duke of Sussex arrived within the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv this morning, after flying to Poland after which taking an overnight train into the war-torn country.<\/p>\n
Harry said that it was \u2018good to be back in Ukraine,\u2019 and that he wanted his visit \u2018to remind people back home and world wide what Ukraine is up against\u2019.<\/p>\n
He described Ukraine as a rustic \u2018bravely and successfully defending Europe\u2019s eastern flank,\u2019 adding that it \u2018matters that we don\u2019t lose sight of the importance of that\u2019.<\/p>\n
Harry\u2019s unannounced visit comes only one week after Russia\u2019s deadliest drone and missile strike on the capital this 12 months, which killed 17 people and injured greater than 100.<\/p>\n Start your day informed with Metro’s News Updates<\/strong> newsletter or get Breaking News <\/strong>alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n The British Army veteran attended the Kyiv Security Conference, where he delivered a speech to the \u2018brave\u2019 people of Ukraine.<\/p>\n Harry declared he was \u2018here as a soldier who understands service, as a humanitarian who has seen the human cost of conflict.\u2019<\/p>\n The prince addressed that today marks the anniversary of the beginning of the war and, directly addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said: \u2018President Putin, no nation advantages from the continued lack of life we’re witnessing.<\/p>\n \u2018There continues to be a moment \u2013 now \u2013 to stop this war, to stop further suffering for Ukrainians and Russians alike, and to decide on a unique course.\u2019<\/p>\n He also referred to the \u2018American leadership\u2019, but didn’t mention Donald Trump by name, saying it was a \u2018moment for America to indicate that it will possibly honour its international treaty obligations\u2026not out of charity, but out of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability\u2019.<\/p>\n He said: \u2018The US has a singular role on this story. Not only due to its power, but because when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, America was a part of the reassurance that Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and borders can be respected.\u2019<\/p>\n The 41-year-old also described himself as a \u2018friend of Ukraine who believes the world must not grow used to this war or numb to its consequences.\u2019<\/p>\n He said: \u2018Over the past 12 months, I\u2019ve had the honour and privilege of visiting Ukraine twice. Every time I left deeply moved by the courage, dignity and unbreakable spirit of the Ukrainian people.<\/p>\n \u2018For 4 years, Ukraine has stood firm. You\u2019ve shown the world what true resilience looks like. <\/p>\n \u2018You reminded us all that freedom and independence are never guaranteed.
