\u2018We\u2019d like to have more children, but all the pieces\u2019s too expensive and I even have to work full time.\u2019<\/p>\n

Often, I\u2019d be delighted to listen to a friend say they were done having children and their family is complete.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m childfree, so it will be a good assumption that friends having children is a difficult subject for me. Yes, I miss the times that quick drinks accidently become coming home at 3am, and I complain that WhatsApp groups are only baby photos now. But, loved-ones achieving their dream of getting kids is an excellent thing.<\/p>\n

So, the comment from my friend must have had me celebrating that we\u2019d soon be back to impromptu dinners, once they\u2019re out of the newborn stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As an alternative, I felt sad for her.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an enormous difference between \u2018no more children for us!\u2019 and \u2018external circumstances beyond our control mean we don\u2019t feel capable of have more children\u2019.<\/p>\n

One is a joyful realisation, a goal achieved. The opposite is unhappy acceptance.<\/p>\n

The continued cost-of-living crisis has taken the choice away. People simply cannot afford to have a couple of or two kids, and a few aren\u2019t having any in any respect.<\/p>\n

On a regular basis home items like detergent, medications, toys, and even condoms are costlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a situation I wrote about back in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n

My personal realisation was, even when I wanted children, the post-pandemic cost-of-living crisis would make parenthood unimaginable for me. I feel strongly about being absolutely sure I could afford to have a baby. Having grown up with money struggles, I\u2019d wish to make certain I could provide a consistently comfortable, protected upbringing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the time, many family and friends were dismissive, I heard all of it: \u2018it\u2019s hard, but you simply get on with it\u2019, \u2018it\u2019s not that expensive\u2019, and the classic, \u2018you\u2019ll change your mind\u2019.<\/p>\n

4 years later, with more global conflicts and more economic pressures, I feel an increasing number of sure of my alternative.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What was meant to be a short-term cost-of-living crisis is now just the norm. And, the US-Israeli war against Iran has pushed budgets far beyond what’s manageable. After all, it\u2019s the Iranian people who find themselves most importantly and brutally affected by the war. Within the UK, we\u2019re lucky. We will not be living in a war zone.<\/p>\n

As an alternative, our lives are impacted financially.<\/p>\n

Our energy bills had already risen sharply for the reason that Russian invasion of Ukraine. Now they\u2019re even higher. Food prices are increasing.\u00a0Weekly supermarket shops are costlier and travel costs are impacted. Petrol and diesel prices significantly jumped.<\/p>\n

Holidays were all the time a treat, but now they\u2019re much more unattainable as airlines cancel flights and add extra charges on account of increased fuel costs.<\/p>\n

In line with the think tank Resolution Foundation, living standards of the typical UK household were heading in the right direction for 0.9% growth. This is predicted to now decrease by 0.6% this financial 12 months on account of the war.<\/p>\n

The Generations and Gender Survey, released just before the US-Israeli war with Iran began, found increasing numbers of young adults are selecting to not have children.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, key reasons for this were attributed to high childcare costs, the cost-of-living crisis, and worries concerning the world their children would inherit.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m definitely seeing more people selecting to be childfree. Once I first told people I didn\u2019t want kids it was unusual. Now I even have a gaggle of childfree friends.<\/p>\n

Despite years of murmurs about \u2018all time low\u2019 birth rates, there hasn\u2019t been any significant attempt to essentially help millennials and Gen Z to grow to be parents. We want a rustic where families can thrive. Funded childcare, more support for working parents, prioritising reasonably priced housing, and radically confronting the cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n
