The matter was settled last night when Los Angeles used the thirteenth overall pick on\u00a0<strong>Ty Simpson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.profootballrumors.com\/files\/2025\/10\/USATSI_27340334-scaled.jpg\"><\/a>Simpson shall be counted on to handle QB2 duties in 2026, taking the place of\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Garoppolo\u00a0<\/strong>in that regard. The latter continues to be unsigned at this point, and retirement might be an option. Various veterans \u2013 including Garoppolo and\u00a0<strong>Kirk Cousins\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 were on the Rams\u2019 radar this spring, but they weren&#8217;t the one ones receiving consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles \u201cmade overtures to sign\u201d\u00a0<strong>Joe Flacco\u00a0<\/strong>during free agency, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/48580958\/los-angeles-rams-decision-2026-nfl-draft-qb-ty-simpson-matthew-stafford\">ESPN\u2019s Jeremy Fowler and Sarah Barshop report<\/a>. The previous Super Bowl MVP sought out a chance to start out when initially on the open market, although a Rams agreement obviously would have seen him back up <strong>Matthew Stafford<\/strong>. Ultimately, Flacco opted to re-sign with the Bengals.<\/p>\n<p>Stafford is under contract for 2026, but the newest round of extension talks between the 2025 MVP and the Rams are ongoing. Earlier this week, it was reported progress was being made on that front. Stafford is currently on account of collect $40MM in his age-38 campaign, although the highest of the quarterback market and his highly productive showing last season point to a different raise being in store.<\/p>\n<p>Flacco would have needed to function a low-cost backup had he joined the Rams. His latest Bengals pact checked in at $6MM in base value (including $4MM guaranteed) with one other $3.5MM available through incentives. As a substitute of creating an analogous financial commitment in March, Los Angeles avoided a veteran contract akin to that one altogether. Entering the draft, it appeared as if Garoppolo could have been in line for an additional inexpensive Rams pact.
