The UFC\u2019s inaugural BMF champion has revealed who he thinks most closely fits the tag.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jorge Masvidal stopped Nate Diaz at UFC 244 to shut out a star-making 12 months for \u2018Gamebred\u2019. It also ensured that he entered 2020 with a belt around his waist.<\/p>\n

A symbolic BMF title was created for that fight. While it was intended to be a one-off, the strap was later resurrected for Dustin Poirier\u2019s rematch against Justin Gaethje in 2023.<\/p>\n

It has remained lively since then and now sits within the possession of Charles Oliveira. Masvidal, nonetheless, doesn’t think the Brazilian is the highest BMF currently competing on MMA\u2019s biggest stage.<\/p>\n

Jorge Masvidal picks Ilia Topuria because the UFC\u2019s true BMF over Alex Pereira<\/h2>\n

Oliveira beat Max Holloway at UFC 326 in March to grow to be the fourth BMF champion. Many were unhappy with that fight and the way in which during which \u2018Do Bronx\u2019 won the belt.<\/p>\n

Masvidal has defended Oliveira\u2019s BMF status, however the Brazilian could still only just make the Miami native\u2019s top five in the case of the UFC\u2019s top BMFs.<\/p>\n

\u2018Gamebred\u2019 made his picks during an appearance on Paramount\u2019s\u00a0Deep Waters<\/a> podcast and reserved the highest spots for lightweight king Ilia Topuria and up to date light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got\u00a0Ilia, No. 1,\u201d Masvidal said.<\/p>\n

\u201cChama (Pereira), No. 2, because that guy fights. Everybody knows, in Japan, in Korea, it doesn\u2019t matter whether it\u2019s Thailand or Japan. International. He’s a star. He’s an effing star, bro. Like, it\u2019s crazy, man.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. 3, I\u2019ll go along with (Khamzat) Chimaev. I feel Chimaev is a large star worldwide,\u201d Masvidal continued. \u201cNo. 4, I\u2019m going to throw a curveball at y\u2019all. But I feel especially after his next fight, he\u2019s going to be certainly one of the most important names,\u00a0Sean Strickland, bro. And he\u2019s got like that whole love and hate. He\u2019s going to be up there.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. 5, I\u2019m going to go along with\u00a0Charles Oliveira. He\u2019s so famous worldwide. He\u2019s got the entire Brazil on his back without even mentioning it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ilia Topuria knocked out Max Holloway when he was the BMF champion<\/h2>\n

Interestingly, the UFC\u2019s lightweight champion does have a legitimate claim to BMF status.<\/p>\n

After unseating Alexander Volkanovski from the featherweight throne, \u2018El Matador\u2019 was booked to defend the title against Max Holloway in October 2024.<\/p>\n

\u2018Blessed\u2019 was six months faraway from knocking out Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 to grow to be the third BMF champion, following within the footsteps of \u2018The Highlight\u2019 and Masvidal.<\/p>\n

Holloway was then brutally KO\u2019d by Topuria, but his symbolic title was not on the road alongside the featherweight championship.<\/p>\n

That has not stopped the Spaniard from laying claim to BMF status, something many have backed given his dominant display against the Hawaiian. <\/p>\n
