Meta Platforms Inc. has acquired Assured Robot Intelligence Inc., a provider of artificial intelligence software for robots.<\/span><\/p>\n

The social media giant announced the deal today without disclosing the financial terms. It did specify that the acquisition is designed to advance its efforts to develop humanoid robots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assured Robot Intelligence\u2019s <\/span>single-page website<\/span><\/a> doesn\u2019t provide details about its AI software. The San Diego-based company was founded by distinguished AI researchers Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang. Pinto previously co-founded Fauna Robotics Inc., a humanoid robot startup that was acquired by Amazon.com Inc. in March. Wang is a former Nvidia Corp. researcher and an associate professor on the University of California at San Diego.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last yr, Wang <\/span>gave<\/span><\/a> an educational discuss a humanoid robot control system developed by his team. The system enables users to view footage from a robot\u2019s cameras through a virtual reality headset. When the direction of the wearable changes with the turn of the user\u2019s head, the robot repositions its cameras accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n

That technology can have been an element behind Meta\u2019s decision to swoop in. Last yr, the corporate launched a pair of smart glasses called the Meta Ray-Ban Display. Meta could also be seeking to develop humanoid robots that users can control remotely using smart glasses.<\/span><\/p>\n

The display contains a built-in screen that may theoretically show footage from a robot\u2019s cameras. Moreover, the device ships with a wristband called the Neural Band that permits users to regulate it with hand gestures. Future versions of the accessory theoretically could possibly be repurposed to regulate a humanoid robot\u2019s arms.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Assured Robot Intelligence team will join Meta Superintelligence Labs, the business unit that leads the Facebook parent\u2019s AI development efforts. The group trained the Muse Spark large language model that the corporate debuted last month. Moreover, it includes the Meta Robotics Studio, the team that leads Meta\u2019s humanoid robot initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last yr, Bloomberg <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a> that the corporate doesn\u2019t plan to launch its own humanoid robot. As an alternative, it hopes to produce components and software to other market players. The report compared the role that Meta hopes to play to Qualcomm Inc.\u2019s position within the mobile ecosystem. The latter company supplies chips to many Android handset makers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The MIA500 machine learning chip that Meta <\/span>debuted<\/span><\/a> last month could also be a part of its plan for the robotics market. It\u2019s an inference accelerator that may provide 10 petaflops of performance when processing FP8 data. In theory, Meta could develop a power-efficient version of the chip optimized for humanoid robots and sell it to other corporations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The social media giant stated that Assured Robot Intelligence will help its engineers develop robot control systems and AI model architectures. Moreover, the startup\u2019s team will explore latest self-learning techniques. Self-learning is an AI training approach that teaches neural networks to perform latest tasks through trial and error.<\/span><\/p>\n
