But it surely does show how valued they’re within the eyes of Sony, and the archiving of materials related to their past development might be of use afterward, whether that is a re-release or recent project.

PlayStation Is Going To Great Lengths To Preserve Its History

A yr ago, Fredley spoke at GDC to stipulate the large endeavor, one which has over 200 million files being preserved.

“PlayStation Studios Vault is our solution for bringing all of PlayStation’s wealthy, 30-year history together in a single place,” Fredley said during a GDC talk. “Not only backups, not only source code and source art, but the whole lot that was ever related to a project we are able to possibly find, from documentation to audio assets and prototype information, anything under the sun.”

Every thing related to a game’s development, including the construct itself, is preserved and sent to “staging vaults” in Las Vegas and Liverpool. From there, things are sent to the actual vault, where things are housed on data tapes.

“All 30 years of history reside in our tape backups,” Fredley said.

The info tapes are then stored in mine shafts that only a select few have access to, including members of the preservation team and IT department. Anyone that wishes access to the archives must undergo them.

On the time of the GDC talk, the oldest game on record that had been archived was 1994s Arc the Lad, with PS5 titles, particularly, being added continually.

Few things are as essential in modern gaming than preservation, and Sony has been on the forefront of that effort for a while, going so far as to store the archived files in a mine shaft that only a few people have access to.
