After a brutal regular-season performance that saw them record considered one of the five worst records within the NHL, the Maple Leafs got a serious break once they won the league&#8217;s Draft Lottery. Consequently, the Leafs may have the primary pick within the upcoming draft.<\/p>\n<p>The Maple Leafs fired general manager Brad Treliving during their painful regular season and so they made a shocking hire by bringing in John Chayka to take over that position. Chayka had been out of the league after getting suspended by Gary Bettman for detrimental conduct and ultimately dismissed by the Arizona Coyotes in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The hiring was quite controversial, and NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has reported that Chayka is planning to spend time with superstar Auston Matthews to realize his feeling on whether he desires to remain with the Maple Leafs in the long run. Matthew has two years remaining on his contract, and the assumption is that he desires to know more concerning the direction <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/video\/2026\/05\/07\/lebrun-chayka-set-to-meet-with-matthews-berube-soon\/\">Chayka will direct the team<\/a> within the near future before he decides if he wants to stick with the Leafs.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Chayka is planning to have a conversation with current head coach Craig Berube. That conversation could possibly be the determining factor on Berube&#8217;s future with the team. There are a lot of coaching candidates who could possibly be on Chayka&#8217;s list if he wants a brand new coach \u2014 including former Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy \u2014 but Chayka desires to speak with Berube before he makes a move.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Toronto Maple Leafs are clearly a team in transition.
