Martin Keown has reignited his simmering feud with Peter Schmeichel, hitting out on the Manchester United legend\u2019s \u2018ridiculous\u2019 tackle West Ham\u2019s disallowed goal against Arsenal.<\/p>\n

Schmeichel has been an outspoken critic of Arsenal\u2019s playing style under Mikel Arteta, branding the Gunners\u2019 tactical approach \u2018ugly\u2019 and \u2018annoying\u2019 after the side\u2019s defeat to Liverpool in September \u2013 a scathing attack which Keown labelled \u2018deranged\u2019.<\/p>\n

After three successive runners-up finishes, though, Arsenal appear on track to finish their 22-year drought within the Premier League this season, with just two games remaining against Burnley and Crystal Palace.<\/p>\n

The north Londoners\u2019 title charge had looked susceptible to derailing following a 2-1 loss at Manchester City last month, but victory in Sunday\u2019s pulsating derby with relegation-threatened West Ham restored the leaders\u2019 five-advantage at the highest.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the main talking point of the competition got here on the death as Callum Wilson struck through a crowd of bodies to seemingly rescue the Hammers some extent following Leandro Trossard\u2019s earlier effort.<\/p>\n

But after a lengthy VAR check, which dragged on for the very best a part of five minutes, the goal was disallowed for a foul within the build-up, with Pablo adjudged to have impeded David Raya with an arm across his chest.<\/p>\n

Arteta was quick to praise the \u2018brave\u2019 officiating on show and Sky Sports\u2019 punditry panel of Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jamie Redknapp followed suit, agreeing that referee Chris Kavanagh and his team eventually arrived at the right decision.<\/p>\n

Schmeichel, meanwhile, took an altogether different view in his post-match evaluation on Viaplay<\/a>, insisting the choice to disallow Wilson\u2019s strike was \u2018so unsuitable on so many levels\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018What really makes me indignant is that Arsenal would never be top of the league if that\u2019s a free-kick,\u2019 the previous United and Denmark goalkeeper said.<\/p>\n

\u2018That\u2019s how they\u2019ve scored so many goals, by blocking people, holding people, doing all types of things.<\/p>\n

\u2018After which we get thus far, it takes VAR five minutes, Darren England the VAR, it takes five minutes.<\/p>\n

\u2018He starts it once more and starts it once more and again\u2026 that in itself puts a lot doubt into that call that it can’t be a free-kick.<\/p>\n

\u2018I feel it\u2019s so unsuitable. I just don\u2019t understand why unexpectedly that\u2019s a free-kick, since it\u2019s not been for any teams all the way in which throughout the season.<\/p>\n

\u2018All this, it\u2019s just crazy. And that call today, it\u2019s just so unsuitable on so many levels.\u2019<\/p>\n

But giving his thoughts on talkSPORT<\/a> this morning, ex-Arsenal defender Keown suggested Schmeichel\u2019s comments could have been influenced by the Dane\u2019s ties to each Manchester City and Manchester United.<\/p>\n

\u2018He\u2019s holding his arm! I\u2019d wish to think I\u2019m a good man, it is a just decision,\u2019 Keown explained.<\/p>\n

\u2018What\u2019s remarkable is that it\u2019s a goalkeeper affected by this\u2026 if it had happened to him [Schmeichel] then he\u2019d have been screaming from the rooftops that that\u2019s a foul.<\/p>\n

\u2018If he [Schmeichel] continues to be playing and he gets fouled to that degree\u2026 come on, it\u2019s ridiculous.\u2019<\/p>\n

On Schmeichel, Keown went on: \u2018He\u2019s indignant since it\u2019s Arsenal. Did he not play for Manchester City? Did he not play for Manchester United? The present rivals and the previous rivals of Arsenal.<\/p>\n

\u2018There was no disguise to the West Ham situation. There was three fouls on him.<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019ve seen that every one season, it\u2019s been like a wrestling match. Until yesterday, they\u2019ve stopped putting the ball within the box, Arsenal, because they\u2019ve been wrestled to the bottom so that they\u2019re now going with the short corner which shows creativity, imagination.\u2019<\/p>\n

While Keown is adamant the suitable call was made on Sunday, he believes \u2018something radical\u2019 could have to be done to combat the quantity of wrestling and holding at set-pieces within the Premier League.<\/p>\n

He added: \u2018What probably must occur next season is in case your opponent is marking you within the box, holding onto you, not even the ball, and the ball is delivered, I feel possibly we\u2019re a direct red card.<\/p>\n

\u2018Do something radical to alter that.<\/p>\n

\u2018I consider 100 per cent that the referee got it right, there\u2019s three fouls on the goalkeeper.<\/p>\n

\u2018The worrying thing for me is that it takes so long and it must be three fouls.<\/p>\n

\u2018You\u2019ve got to have the option to see this stuff quicker. They\u2019re seeing these stills\u2026 come on, within the moment! <\/p>\n

\u2018When you\u2019re on the pitch, you might have to see the pass and also you make the pass.\u2019<\/p>\n

Asked if he felt the title race was now over, Keown replied: \u2018We\u2019ll should wait and see, won\u2019t we? We may have to attend and see. There are still two games to go.<\/p>\n

\u2018Do the job, don’t be distracted by all of the noise. You\u2019re busy on the wheel, don\u2019t look behind you, keep going for it.\u2019<\/p>\n
