{"id":333473,"date":"2026-05-12T16:12:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T10:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ebiztoday.news\/?p=333473"},"modified":"2026-05-12T16:12:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T10:42:31","slug":"canadian-intelligence-officers-visit-quebec-company-after-sniper-rifles-turn-up-in-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ebiztoday.news\/index.php\/2026\/05\/12\/canadian-intelligence-officers-visit-quebec-company-after-sniper-rifles-turn-up-in-russia\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian intelligence officers visit Quebec company after sniper rifles turn up in Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Canadian intelligence officers visited a Quebec firearms manufacturer after its sniper rifles turned up in Russia, based on the corporate\u2019s president.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) met with Cadex Defence about Russia\u2019s efforts to evade sanctions, Serge Dextraze told Global News.<\/p>\n<p>The briefing took place after Global News reported in October that social media posts showed Cadex rifles on the market in Moscow and within the hands of Russian snipers.<\/p>\n<p>While a number of the Canadian-made guns appeared to have been captured from Ukrainian forces, others looked brand recent and still had their product tags.<\/p>\n<p>Sanctions imposed in response to President Vladimir Putin\u2019s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine banned the export of weapons to Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Based south of Montreal, Cadex supplies military and law enforcement agencies worldwide. Dextraze said the corporate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cadexdefence.com\/important-statement\/announcements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">didn&#8217;t export its products to Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below commercial<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CSIS said it had been working with manufacturers and exporters to forestall Russia from acquiring Canadian goods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith increased awareness of this illicit activity, Canadian firms are higher enabled to proactively vet customers themselves,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--aligncenter c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\" style=\"width:1200px;\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tCadex headquarters south of Montreal.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>CSIS wouldn&#8217;t comment further, but its May 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/security-intelligence-service\/corporate\/publications\/csis-public-report-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual report<\/a> said Russia was attempting to \u201cillicitly procure export controlled and sanctioned technology from the West, including Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h2 class=\"c-inlineSignup__title\">Get each day National news<\/h2>\n<p>Get each day Canada news delivered to your inbox so you will never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Russian procurement efforts are focused on materials required \u201cto sustain its military-industrial complex and support its war against Ukraine,\u201d CSIS wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpecifically, Russia sought to acquire Canadian technology, equivalent to microelectronics, satellite communication technology, and precision firearms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report said CSIS had assisted Canadian firms so that they could \u201cdiscover how Canadian goods were being acquired and shipped to Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below commercial<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dextraze confirmed in a phone call with Global News that CSIS had met together with his company several times to debate the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The intelligence officers \u201cverified that we now have done every little thing in the right way,\u201d but additionally used the visit as a possibility to help the corporate, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the CSIS officials were \u201csharing their knowledge with the individuals who had security clearance \u2026 How can we pay attention to things that we\u2019re not aware of?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did give some help, and the recommendation that they gave us, we\u2019re not allowed initially to repeat since it\u2019s under high confidentiality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey usually told us to take care of, actually, quite a low profile on the methodology that they&#8217;ve proposed to us. The measures are an try to isolate Putin and undermine his war effort.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below commercial<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But American, European and Canadian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/latest-news\/russia-imports-foreign-made-rifles-ammunition-despite-intl-sanctions-new-investigation-shows-incl-cos-responses-non-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">firearms have nonetheless appeared in Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In March, a U.S. court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edny\/pr\/arms-dealer-pleads-guilty-conspiring-export-american-made-ammunition-used-war-against\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted an Italian<\/a> of a scheme that shipped ammunition to Kyrgyzstan.
