in the course of the Second World War has been recovered in the house of relatives of well-known Dutch SS collaborator Hendrik Seyffardt and is now within the hands of a Dutch journalist, art detective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/arthurbrandartdetective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arthur Brand<\/a> told Global News.<\/p>\n<p>The renowned painting titled <em>Portrait of a Young Girl<\/em> by Dutch artist Toon Kelder belonged to the looted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecjm.org\/exhibitions\/36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Goudstikker collection<\/a> and is believed to have remained for years in the house of Seyffardt\u2019s descendants, in line with Brand,\u00a0who described the invention as \u201cprobably the most bizarre case of my entire profession,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2026\/may\/11\/portrait-looted-nazis-home-dutch-ss-leader-family-toon-kelder-goudstikker-hendrik-seyffardt\" target=\"_blank\" commercial<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Seyffardt collaborated with the Nazis during Hitler\u2019s invasion of the Netherlands and led a volunteer Waffen-SS unit on the Eastern Front before he was assassinated in 1943.<\/p>\n<p>Seyffardt was given a Nazi state funeral in The Hague and received a wreath sent by Hitler.<\/p>\n<p>Jacques Goudstikker, a famed Dutch-Jewish art collector and owner of the painting, died while attempting to flee the invasion, abandoning greater than 1,000 works.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, his family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecjm.org\/exhibitions\/36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">successfully reclaimed<\/a> 200 Nazi-looted items that had since come under the control of the Dutch government, in line with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecjm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Contemporary Jewish Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img yr when a Nazi-looted painting \u2014 also belonging to the Goudstikker collection \u2014 was found at a house in Argentina, where 1000&#8217;s of notorious Nazis and war criminals fled after the war.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of the more moderen Dutch discovery, Brand told Dutch and British media that he was approached by a person who claimed to be a descendant of Seyffardt and said the painting had been hanging within the hallways of the SS collaborator\u2019s granddaughter\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>In accordance with The Guardian, Seyffardt\u2019s granddaughter said the painting was \u201cJewish looted art, stolen from Goudstikker. It&#8217;s unsellable. Don\u2019t tell anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The member of the family then hired Brand, a widely known art detective, who told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraaf.nl\/binnenland\/ss-nazaat-levert-roofkunst-in-schilderij-moet-terug-naar-de-joodse-rechthebbenden\/151372133.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dutch outlet De Telegraaf<\/a> that they felt ashamed and believed the artwork ought to be returned to its rightful owners.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below commercial<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In accordance with the newspaper, the Seyffardt family was discussing whether to return the item, as they claimed they were unaware it had been stolen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI received it from my mother. Now that you just confront me like this, I understand that Goudstikker\u2019s heirs want the painting back. The gallery is the primary within the museum\u2019s history to be given over to the orphaned masterpieces\u00a0of the Nazi era.<\/p>\n<p>The painting by Belgian artist Alfred Stevens was originally earmarked for Hitler\u2019s planned museum in Linz, Austria. But by 1943, it was reassigned to Hitler\u2019s mountain home within the Bavarian region of Germany.
