In a big development, on May 6, Vashu Bhagnani’s Puja Entertainment (India) Ltd. has secured interim protection from the Hon\u2019ble Court of Civil Judge (Senior Division)-I, Katihar, Bihar. The proceedings were initiated against Suggestions Music Limited and other connected parties, including those related to the movies mentioned within the case. The court has directed the parties to keep up establishment regarding the alleged unauthorized use and business exploitation of Puja Entertainment\u2019s movies, music catalogues and underlying mental property rights.<\/p>\n

Puja Entertainment court order seen as landmark moment for producer rights; protection of film IP and legacy rights takes centre stage<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The order is being viewed not merely as an interim legal relief for one production house, but as a vital moment for the larger producer community.<\/p>\n The matter concerns rights connected to a few of Puja Entertainment\u2019s well-known movies, including Coolie No 1<\/em> (1995), Hero No 1<\/em> (1996), Biwi No 1<\/em> (1999), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan<\/em> (1998), Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa<\/em> (2000) and Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai<\/em> (2001). It also concerns the proposed release and exploitation of the upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai<\/em>. As things stand, the film stays subject to the interim establishment and protective orders passed by the court.<\/p>\n In line with Puja Entertainment, the corporate approached the court after discovering alleged unauthorized exploitation, monetization and business use of its movies, music rights, sound recordings and underlying works across streaming, broadcasting, digital platforms and other business channels.<\/p>\n The court, while granting interim protection, observed that failure to offer immediate relief could lead to serious and irreparable injury to the plaintiff\u2019s proprietary and statutory rights.<\/p>\n For the producer community, the event assumes importance because it underlines a bigger principle: legacy film libraries, music catalogues, sound recordings and related works can’t be commercially exploited or repurposed without proper authorization from the rightful owner.<\/p>\n Puja Entertainment has stated that this matter shouldn’t be nearly money. A movie library, in keeping with the corporate, represents years of struggle, investment, creativity, goodwill and legacy.
