BAGUIO\u2014Nikita Shulchenko admitted he felt the pressure when Antoine Huby launched a desperate attack that won the ultimate stage of the MPTC Tour of Luzon on Wednesday here.<\/p>\n

However the Russian rider of Filipino-owned LCW UAE Cycle had built enough of a cushion to face up to Huby\u2019s late charge and secure the title on this yr\u2019s revival of the country\u2019s premier cycling race, which he had controlled almost from the beginning.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it was very dangerous,\u201d Shulchenko said after emerging as the latest champion of the summer cycling spectacle with an aggregate time of 41 hours, 11 minutes and 10 seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I had a [big] gap [going into the last stage],\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old held off the French rider from 7-Eleven Roadbike Philippines by one minute and 34 seconds to pocket the P1 million prize and, perhaps, earn lasting recognition amongst Filipino cycling fans who had hoped a neighborhood rider would repel the foreign challenge.<\/p>\n

Shulchenko also earned himself a neat early birthday gift ahead of his twenty seventh birthday on May 31\u2014even when he can have little time to have a good time.<\/p>\n

Back home in Russia, Shulchenko said the calendar quickly shifts to more multistage races right now of yr, leaving little opportunity to savor a conquest that saw him dominate the Philippines\u2019 great cycling odyssey.<\/p>\n

Shulchenko stamped his authority on the race with a victory within the Stage 7 individual time trial in Pagudpud, while adding five runner-up finishes along the best way.<\/p>\n

He first donned the symbolic yellow jersey after Stage 3, wresting it from Syrian teammate Ibrahiem Alrefai\u2014whom he had allowed to win the opening stage in Tagaytay\u2014and never surrendered it again.<\/p>\n

The early threats got here from the Filipino contingent, particularly the brash crowd favorite Mervin Corpuz and fellow 7-Eleven standout Ronnilan Quita.<\/p>\n

But because the race entered its decisive stretch, Huby emerged as Shulchenko\u2019s biggest danger.<\/p>\n

The previous UCI World Tour rider captured the punishing Stage 10 and Stage 12 climbs at Bessang Pass in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur, and Daang Kalikasan in Mangatarem, Pangasinan, slicing the general deficit to only 2 minutes and 30 seconds.<\/p>\n

Still, Shulchenko responded when it mattered most.<\/p>\n

He finished second within the second individual time trial in Lingayen while Huby could do no higher than thirteenth, allowing the Russian to widen his result in 3:50 heading into the ultimate ascent through Kennon Road toward Baguio City.<\/p>\n

That advantage proved too large to erase, at the same time as Huby ended the Tour with three stage victories\u2014essentially the most by any rider.<\/p>\n

The Frenchman made one final gamble after passing the long-lasting Lion\u2019s Head marker with 15 km remaining, breaking clear on the climb toward Camp John Hay.<\/p>\n

Huby accomplished the grueling 181.8-km stage from Lingayen to Camp John Hay in 4:26:42, but his bid to steal the yellow jersey ultimately fell short when Shulchenko crossed the road 2:12 later.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m completely happy to complete second, but the target was to get the yellow jersey,\u201d Huby said. \u201cBut I did my best.\u201d<\/p>\n

As consolation, Huby secured the Eagle of the Mountain title because the Tour\u2019s best climber.<\/p>\n

Alrefai wound up third overall, 6:45 behind his teammate, while MPT DriveHub\u2019s Nash Lim finished fourth at 9:13, emerging as the highest Filipino rider after a late surge within the standings.<\/p>\n

Quita placed fifth overall, 10:34 off the lead, after arguably delivering essentially the most consistent campaign among the many local riders.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
