The Pentagon has canceled plans to deploy 4,000 U.S.-based troops to\u00a0Poland, two U.S. officials said, a surprise decision slammed by lawmakers that renewed questions on President Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0expected troop cuts in Europe.<\/p>\n

General Christopher LaNeve, the Army\u2019s acting chief of staff, confirmed the choice during testimony on Friday before the House Armed Services Committee. But he did little to clarify it, besides saying \u201cit made essentially the most sense for that brigade to not do its deployment in theater.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joe Courtney, a Democratic lawmaker, told LaNeve the choice sent a \u201chorrible message\u201d about Trump\u2019s commitment to Europe.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrankly, it\u2019s not only our adversaries which are being attentive. It\u2019s our allies,\u201d Courtney said.<\/p>\n

The highest Republican on the committee, Mike Rogers, and the highest Democrat, Adam Smith, each criticized the move and expressed exasperation that Congress was neither notified nor consulted, as required.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening here, but I can just inform you, we\u2019re not glad with what\u2019s being talked about, particularly since there\u2019s been no statutory consultation with us,\u201d Rogers said, warning Congress would inflict \u201cpain\u201d on the Pentagon if it attempted to drop below minimum troop levels in Europe.<\/p>\n

Smith noted that the Army had already sent an advance team of soldiers to\u00a0Poland\u00a0to organize for the deployment and that equipment was already being shipped when Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth\u2019s orders got here down.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s a fairly dramatic decision to, on the last minute, pull a team that you simply\u2019re attempting to send over there. If there\u2019s some strategy behind it, then you definately guys must know and also you must have the ability to speak it to us,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago the Pentagon announced it was withdrawing 5,000 troops from NATO ally Germany, partly as a consequence of a widening rift over\u00a0the Iran war\u00a0between Trump and Europe. It was unclear whether the\u00a0Poland\u00a0decision was aimed toward accomplishing that drawdown, as U.S. troops reorganize in Europe, as one U.S. official told Reuters.<\/p>\n

The U.S. official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the troops that were meant to rotate into\u00a0Poland\u00a0might as a substitute come from elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Still, LaNeve declined to invest about rotations of troops into\u00a0Poland\u00a0from elsewhere in Europe, saying that might be as much as the commander of U.S. troops in Europe.<\/p>\n

Don Bacon, a Republican lawmaker from Nebraska, said he spoke with officials in\u00a0Poland\u00a0and said they were blindsided by a call he called \u201creprehensible\u201d and \u201ca humiliation to our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he had received assurances that\u00a0Poland\u2019s security wouldn’t be impacted by any decisions on the U.S. troop presence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI received assurances, and this can be essential to me, that these decisions are of a logistical nature and can in a roundabout way affect deterrence capabilities and our security,\u201d he told a news conference on Friday.<\/p>\n

The U.S. has been reviewing its troop presence in Europe and has long been expected to scale it back following demands from Trump that NATO take a bigger role within the defense of Europe. The Pentagon has not yet detailed the way it envisions future troop laydowns across the continent.<\/p>\n

At the same time as lawmakers expressed exasperation and confusion over the\u00a0Poland\u00a0decision, the Pentagon said it followed \u201ca comprehensive, multilayered process.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was not an unexpected, last-minute decision, and it could be false to report it as such,\u201d Pentagon spokesperson Joel Valdez said.<\/p>\n
