Taiwan stays a contentious issue between China and multiple countries, including Canada, the US and lots of parts of Europe.<\/p>\n
The problem arose this past week when Xi visited the U.S. and met with President Donald Trump, which saw the Chinese leader warn Trump that the 2 countries could clash over the self-governed island if it\u2019s not handled properly.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s administration has approved an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, but has yet to start fulfilling it.<\/p>\n
The U.S. has a longstanding commitment to assist the island defend itself if attacked, but\u00a0Trump\u00a0has shown\u00a0greater ambivalence toward Taiwan, fueling speculation about whether the president might be persuaded to dial back American support.<\/p>\n
Lai said on Sunday that the arms purchases from the U.S. are \u201ccrucial deterrent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thank President Trump for his continued support for peace and stability across the\u00a0Taiwan\u00a0Strait since his first term, including the continual increase in the size and amount of arms sales to\u00a0Taiwan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The self-governed island and the one-China \u201cprinciple\u201d is taken into account to be the \u201cpolitical foundation of and an inviolable red line\u201d for relations between Canada and China, the embassy said in its statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe urge Canada to earnestly [abide] by its one-China commitment, effectively restrain any words or deeds that violate the one-China principle, and refrain from interfering in China\u2019s internal affairs,\u201d a spokesperson for the embassy wrote.<\/p>\n
Chong stressed in his statement the necessity to opposed the warning.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo stay silent and comply within the face of intimidation is to accommodate this behaviour, further embolden authoritarianism, and further weaken democracy,\u201d said Chong. \u201cIt is just not simply sufficient to proclaim sovereignty; sovereignty have to be exercised.\u201d<\/p>\n
