A person died after being restrained by security guards outside a Dublin shopping centre in a case with echoes of the killing of George Floyd.<\/p>\n

Yves Sakila was pronounced dead in hospital after being held on the bottom outside a busy shopping district, last Friday.<\/p>\n

Mr Sakila, who lived in Ireland for 22 years, was detained by security outside the doorway of Arnotts on Friday afternoon on suspicion of stealing bottles of perfume from the department store.<\/p>\n

Police briefly handcuffed the 35-year-old Congolese national as they tended to a pensioner who was also injured within the alleged shoplifting.<\/p>\n

A five-minute video clip appears to indicate Mr Sakila being held down by around five people, showing the moment they realise he wasn\u2019t respiratory. Mr Sakila died in hospital shortly after.<\/p>\n

The clip has been shared widely online, and has been described as \u2018deeply disturbing\u2019, sparking concern amongst minority communities.<\/p>\n

At one point, a security guard could be seen putting his knee on the back of his head, forcing his face into the ground.<\/p>\n

Moms with babies in prams watch on as he screams out but his head is pinned to the bottom within the busy shopping area.<\/p>\n

The guards shout \u2018stay down\u2019.<\/p>\n

After greater than three minutes, he appears unresponsive and the safety guards let go. One in all the guards puts Mr Sakila\u2019s hood up and appears shaky as he makes a phone call.<\/p>\n

Dozens of individuals gathered at noon on Tuesday, laying flowers and red roses along the busy shopping street.<\/p>\n

Chants of \u2018Justice for Yves\u2019 and \u2018no more violence\u2019 were heard, while some held signs reading \u2018Black lives matter here too\u2019.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed said the person had been detained in reference to alleged shoplifting shortly after 5pm, before becoming unresponsive. He later died in hospital.<\/p>\n

The Garda Ombudsman (Fiosr\u00fa) is now examining the incident after it was referred by officers.<\/p>\n

Arnotts said it was \u2018deeply saddened\u2019 by Mr Sakila\u2019s death and confirmed it’s co-operating with the investigation, in addition to carrying out a review with its contracted security firm.<\/p>\n

Ireland\u2019s Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin offered his sympathies, saying the case should be \u2018thoroughly investigated\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t need to prejudice the consequence,\u2019 he said, \u2018but individuals are clearly very concerned about what has transpired.\u2019<\/p>\n

On the vigil, members of the general public spoke of their shock.<\/p>\n

Chris Kibiadi said: \u2018It\u2019s not all concerning the color. This might occur to anybody.\u2019<\/p>\n

A lady named Lolo described the death as \u2018painful\u2019, adding that garda\u00ed must have been called.<\/p>\n

John Kabongo told the group his children were left frightened after seeing the footage.<\/p>\n

\u2018They asked me, \u201cIs that this really happening in Ireland?\u201d I didn\u2019t know explain it,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Community representatives also called for answers, with Walter Kabangu of the Congolese Chamber of Commerce Ireland saying he was \u2018shocked and saddened\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018As a community, we demand justice,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The Irish Network Against Racism (INAR) said it was \u2018extremely disturbed\u2019 and urged a full investigation to take care of trust within the justice system.<\/p>\n

Arnotts added: \u2018No lack of life should ever be the consequence of a retail security incident.\u2019<\/p>\n

The investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
