SINGAPORE \u2014 Soaring fuel and fertilizer costs linked to the Middle <\/span>East conflict, coupled with drier-than-usual conditions, are putting increasing pressure on domestic <\/span>rice production and threatening <\/span>the Philippines\u2019 food security, based on the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cRising fuel and fertilizer costs driven by Middle East tensions, together with the emerging threat of El Ni\u00f1o, weigh heavily on agricultural production and rice farmers,\u201d IRRI Director-General Yvonne Pinto told BusinessWorld <\/i>on the sidelines of the Philanthropy Asia Summit on Tuesday. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe prospects for food security within the Philippines in two, three years from now are going to be much worse, unless we support and enable farmers to generate income from the rice they’re producing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Filipino farmers are actually grappling with rising costs and unstable supply of fuel and fertilizer, that are essential to rice production, Ms. Pinto said.<\/p>\n The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has affected global supply of fertilizer and caused prices to spike.
