The move is the most recent in a series of attempts by the Trump administration to intervene available in the market, offering grants to firms in strategic sectors, akin to semiconductors and significant minerals, in exchange for equity stakes.<\/p>\n

Last 12 months, the commerce department took a ten percent stake in Intel, by converting $2.2 billion in grants under the Joe Biden-era Chips Act in addition to $8.9 billion in federal grants that had been awarded but not yet paid.<\/p>\n

Since then, several firms have received smaller sums, including Vulcan Elements, a little-known rare earths startup with about 30 employees, through which Trump Jr\u2019s enterprise capital firm has invested.<\/p>\n

Notably absent from the list of firms that signed letters of intent with the commerce department on Thursday was IonQ, a number one quantum company that has attracted significant investment from Cerberus, a firm co-founded by Donald Trump\u2019s deputy secretary of war, Stephen Feinberg.<\/p>\n

The US quantum announcement comes as other countries akin to the UK are increasing their investments in technology and other related fields.<\/p>\n

The flexibility of quantum computers to use the weird properties of matter on the atomic and subatomic levels makes them theoretically able to performing complex calculations much faster than existing machines.<\/p>\n

But significant engineering hurdles remain, akin to in making the machines less liable to errors, while firms are still dueling over which technical approaches work best.<\/p>\n

The deals unveiled on Thursday usually are not final, and the administration said it was still soliciting proposals from other advanced tech firms. Intel is facing a shareholder lawsuit over its take care of the US government.<\/p>\n
