Temperature records toppled as\u00a0a spring heat wave\u00a0continued to scorch parts of Western Europe on Tuesday, triggering government warnings about risks to life. Several drownings were reported in Britain and France as people tried to chill down.<\/p>\n

A temperature of 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) was recorded at London\u2019s Kew Gardens and Heathrow Airport, Britain\u2019s Met Office weather service said, breaking the 34.8 C (94.6 F) record set a day earlier. The provisional readings smashed the previous record of 32.8 C (91.4 F) set in 1922 and 1944.<\/p>\n

London also recorded a rare \u201ctropical night,\u201d defined as one wherein the temperature doesn’t fall below 20 C (68 F).<\/p>\n

Records also fell in France, where temperatures reached 36 C (97 F) on Monday within the country\u2019s southwest and widely remained above 20 C at night.<\/p>\n

The national weather service, M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France, said a \u201cheat dome,\u201d with heat held in place by a high-pressure weather front, was producing temperatures greater than 10 degrees Celsius above what was once usual for this time of 12 months.<\/p>\n
