A hearth at a girls\u2019 school in central\u00a0Kenya<\/strong>\u00a0has killed greater than a dozen students as they slept.<\/p>\n

The fireplace began at Utumishi Girls School, about 80 miles west of Nairobi, early this morning.<\/p>\n

Police said search teams had been deployed to account for all students, and the Kenyan Red Cross said they\u2019re on the bottom.<\/p>\n

The fireplace broke out early within the morning within the boarding school\u2019s accommodation section, and the cause has not yet been established. <\/p>\n

    School fires are common in\u00a0Kenyan boarding schools, with some attributable to arson and others by electrical faults.<\/p>\n

    Police commander Masoud Mwinyi said: \u2018It’s a sad and saddening situation.\u2019<\/p>\n

    Students are receiving treatment at a neighborhood hospital<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    Mwinyi told local media that some students had been taken to hospital for injuries, and the varsity is cordoned off.<\/p>\n

    In 2023, a big fire at a\u00a0school\u00a0dormitory in Guyana killed 19 children and injured several others.<\/p>\n
