Donald Trump has suggested US troops will remain in Iran even when a deal is brokered, to destroy the nation\u2019s highly enriched uranium resources.<\/p>\n

The US president insisted either side were \u2018very close\u2019 to an agreement and that Iran had conceded on nuclear weapons, but \u2018a few points\u2019 remained.<\/p>\n

He said he had insisted on a clause being inserted to the pact stopping Iran from having the ability to \u2018buy, purchase or acquire\u2019 nuclear weapons along with being banned from developing them.<\/p>\n

Talking to NBC<\/a>, Trump said he found Iran\u2019s recent leadership \u2018very smart, very rational\u2019 and even favourably compared supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei together with his late father Ali.<\/p>\n

Mr Khamenei has not been seen in public since his father was killed on the primary day of the war on February 28.<\/p>\n

But Trump insisted US troops would remain in Iran until \u2018completion\u2019.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018If we make a deal that now we\u2019re friendly, we\u2019ll all go together. It\u2019ll be our equipment. We\u2019ll take it out and destroy it, whether it\u2019s on-site or whether we take it off-site.\u2019<\/p>\n

If Iran did not make a deal, Trump said he would \u2018take them out militarily very harshly\u2019.<\/p>\n

He further suggested that he would give you the chance to observe any uranium activity from space.<\/p>\n

\u2018You recognize, we’ve cameras on it, throughout it. If anybody walked there, should you walked over there, I’d give you the chance to read your first name in your lapel\u2019, the president insisted.<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly blamed his predecessors, including Barack Obama, whose agreement with Iran he ripped up during his first term on the White House.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless he hinted that he could resurrect the unique deal\u2019s commitment to unfreeze Iranian assets if Iran\u2019s leadership \u2018behave\u2019.<\/p>\n

Asked why Iran hadn\u2019t put pen to paper yet, Trump replied it was a \u2018very hard thing for them\u2019 after he claimed that they had been allowed for years to \u2018get away with murder\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018I believe they’ll\u2019t consider they\u2019re in this case where they\u2019re virtually decapitated\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the US military central command said it had shot down several Iranian drones and missiles launched towards the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf states.<\/p>\n

It said it had also targeted a few of the Islamic Republic\u2019s coastal surveillance radar sites.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile a ceasefire deal brokered between Israel and Lebanon has come under stress as either side exchanged fire.<\/p>\n

Israeli forces said at the least five projectiles fired from Lebanon had either been intercepted or fallen in open areas.<\/p>\n

The IDF also launched strikes at several areas in southern Lebanon in response to the Hezbollah missiles.<\/p>\n
