A federal lawsuit filed in Washington, D.C., is attempting to stop UFC Freedom 250, the mixed martial arts event scheduled for June 14 on the South Lawn of the White House. The legal challenge was brought by the Public Integrity Project on behalf of two Virginia residents, identified in court filings as a political activist and a Vietnam War veteran.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit argues that federal agencies, including the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service, violated federal law by allowing what plaintiffs describe as a non-public, for-profit sporting event to happen on public land. The criticism alleges that construction related to the event, including the installation of a large 600-ton steel arch referred to as \u201cThe Claw,\u201d required congressional authorization since the South Lawn is federal parkland. It also claims no environmental review was accomplished before construction began.<\/p>\n

An emergency request for a preliminary injunction was submitted early Sunday, with attorney Brendan Ballou, founding father of the Public Integrity Project, saying he expects a court ruling this week. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit further contends that the event doesn’t qualify for exemptions tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
