\n\tHe added that there was a whole lot of \u201creally inappropriate\u201d humor in \u201cThe Office,\u201d especially from his character, Dwight Schrute, and Steve Carell\u2019s lead, Michael Scott. Wilson thought, though Michael and Dwight were portrayed as having no \u201cself-awareness,\u201d their antics wouldn\u2019t fly in 2026.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe milked that for a whole lot of great, really inappropriate stuff,\u201d Wilson recalled. \u201cBut even with the undeniable fact that painting that character as just an idiot, I don\u2019t think you could possibly get away with it today.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tWilson starred as Schrute across all nine seasons of \u201cThe Office,\u201d which aired on NBC for 201 episodes from 2005 to 2013<\/p>\n
\n\tDespite Wilson\u2019s comments, \u201cThe Office\u201d recently received \u201cThe Paper,\u201d a sequel series that premiered on Peacock in September 2025. Starring Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key and Oscar Nu\u00f1ez, \u201cThe Paper\u201d follows the day-to-day of a struggling Midwestern newspaper. The second season is about to launch later this 12 months.<\/p>\n
\n\tThis isn\u2019t the primary time Wilson opened up about how \u201cThe Office\u201d pushed boundaries with its humor. He told \u201cThe Last Laugh\u201d podcast back in September 2025 that \u201cThe Office\u201d might be \u201cjaw-droppingly\u201d offensive, and that if it were released today, it will be a \u201cvery, very different\u201d show.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cListen you realize, the Benihana Christmas episode where Michael and Andy draw with a sharpie on one in all the Asian women that they\u2019ve brought back to the Christmas party is jaw droppingly sort of horrific,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a difficult conversation, you realize? They\u2019re clueless and of their cluelessness they\u2019re racist and insensitive, they usually\u2019re at all times saying the flawed thing. And that\u2019s Michael, Dwight and Andy \u2014 and Kevin for that matter. So it\u2019s a show based around clueless, insensitive, racist, sexist those who sort of mirrors the US in a whole lot of ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
