President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. called Congress to a special session starting June 17 to fast-track pending social protection and reform measures, citing urgent needs from a recent Mindanao earthquake and energy challenges.<\/p>\n
Under Proclamation No. 1318, the Senate and House of Representatives were directed to think about measures which have reached advanced stages within the legislative process.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe challenges confronting our people demand urgent motion,\u201d Mr. Marcos said in a press release. \u201cFamilies affected by the recent earthquake in Mindanao require immediate assistance. Students need continued support to pursue their education.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur senior residents deserve higher healthcare. Our kids should have higher nutrition and vulnerable sectors need stronger protection,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Priority bills include the National Center for Geriatric Health, the Presidential Merit Scholarship Program and a proposed Anti-Political Dynasty law.<\/p>\n
Lawmakers are also set to tackle amendments to key education support and emergency assistance programs.<\/p>\n
The 1987 Structure lets the President call Congress at any time to handle urgent legislative matters.<\/p>\n
