Then\u00a0they\u00a0return home to communities already battling the virus. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Clean water costs\u00a0$2 (\u00a31.50) for 20 litres. (AP Photo\/Dirole Lotsima Dieudonne)\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\">\t<\/div><figcaption>Locals, keen to bury the dead, have burnt hospitals down after medical experts declined to release the body (Picture: AP Photo\/Dirole Lotsima Dieudonn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The strain of Ebola virus behind this outbreak,\u00a0often called Bundibugyo, is rare and has no vaccine or treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that is the most important Bundibugyo outbreak on record.<\/p>\n<p>North Kivu province is even seeing Ebola cases being identified after the patient has died, unaware that they had the illness. <\/p>\n<p>Contact tracing \u2013 seeing who an infected person has come into contact with \u2013 has just 43% coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Oxford fieldwork\u00a0found that there are only 0.2 doctors per 1,000 people, and a few 70 health facilities have been destroyed by conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The years-long violence that has torn the DRC has displaced tens of millions, including people in Ituri, complicating contact tracing efforts. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@metrouk\/video\/7641264025107533078\" data-video-id=\"7641264025107533078\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width:605px; min-width:325px;\">\n<section> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@metrouk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@metrouk?refer=embed\">@metrouk<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation has officially declared the Ebola outbreak in Congo as an \u2018emergency of international concern\u2019.  Officials have stressed that whilst this isn\u2019t a world pandemic like Covid, there\u2019s concern about regional spread after cases have crossed into Uganda. Ebola is spread through bodily fluids and this strain is the Bundibugyo virus, which currently has no approved vaccine or treatment. \ud83c\udfa5 @zofia_louise <a title=\"worldnews\" target=\"_blank\" <\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Aid staff have erected isolation tents and disinfection stations near hospitals, just for locals to burn down the facilities when officials refused at hand over the bodies of the dead over fears of infection spread.<\/p>\n<p>People can develop into infected with Ebola through contact with the bodily fluids of an infected, sick or dead person.<\/p>\n<p>Locals see hospitals now as \u2018death traps\u2019, so are turning to traditional health methods, which Rebordosa says is hampering containment. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to some locals simply not knowing much about Ebola, Rebordosa\u00a0said the US has played a job within the Ebola outbreak. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018One month into the 2018 outbreak, healthcare staff achieved contact tracing rates where nearly eight in 10 known contacts were successfully monitored,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Today, following the withdrawal of the US funding for disease surveillance and severe funding shortfalls, contact tracing is reaching fewer than half of the contacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That gap is just not only a statistic; it&#8217;s a painful reality that enables the virus to spread undetected through communities.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\" data-ico=\"factbox_article\" data-track-module=\"factbox_article\">\n<h2 class=\"factbox-title\">\n\t\t\t\tWhat&#8217;s Ebola?\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<div bunch of related viruses, often called orthoebolaviruses.<\/p>\n<p>Infections are available two parts \u2013 dry and wet. <\/p>\n<p>Dry symptoms, which include fever, aches, pains and fatigue, can progress to \u2018wet\u2019 ones equivalent to diarrhoea, vomiting and bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>As the primary round of symptoms, which show inside 21 days, resemble the common cold or flu, many Ebola cases go undiagnosed. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The US withdrew from the World Health Organization in January after closing the US Agency for International Development.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s some hope: About 25 people have recovered from the virus, the African CDC, a continental health group, said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AfricaCDC\/status\/2065365231975485665\" target=\"_blank\" director at International SOS, a number one health and security risk services company, told <strong>Metro <\/strong>that there may be an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2026-05-22-statement-on-vaccine-efforts-relating-to-the-bundibugyo-ebolavirus-outbreak-in-the\"> \u2018experimental\u2019 Bundibugyo vaccine<\/a> within the works. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The vaccine is being developed within the UK by the Oxford Vacccine Group using the identical technology used to develop COVID vaccine,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Researchers are developing Bundibugyo\u00a0Ebolavirus candidate vaccine, ChADOx1BDBV,  an accelerated schedule while adhering to established scientific, ethical and regulatory standards.\u2019<\/p>\n<p
