Finland has passed laws which lift a ban on nuclear weapons because it faces increased security concerns from Russia.<\/p>\n
The brand new bill allows the import, transport, supply and possession of nuclear arms in Finland for national defence.<\/p>\n
The federal government cited an \u2018unpredictable security environment\u2019 \u2013 and added that as of now, Finland won\u2019t host any nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n
A previous bill, the 1987 Nuclear Energy Act, prohibited any nuclear weapons on Finnish soil.<\/p>\n
Defence Minister Antti H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen said the 1987 act posed an ungainly situation for Finland, a NATO member as of April 2023.<\/p>\n
NATO is targeted on nuclear deterrence, with the collective defence model working partially due to each country agreeing to assist each other, even in nuclear capacities.<\/p>\n

Now, Finland could in theory host nuclear weapons for NATO \u2013 giving the alliance a more in-depth edge on Russia, which has upped aggressive tactics within the years because it invaded Ukraine. <\/p>\n
Just last week, Russia\u00a0began construction on a brand new military base eerily near\u00a0Finland\u2019s eastern border for the primary time because the USSR collapsed.<\/p>\n
Latest aerial photos show a dozen latest barracks under construction after\u00a0work\u00a0began in late 2025 to clear forest nearby.<\/p>\n
The bottom could accommodate between 4,000 and 6,000 personnel, military expert and former Finnish intelligence officer Marko Eklund found.<\/p>\n
The brand new base and the installation of troops there could pose a security issue for Finland, which shares an 830-mile border with Russia.<\/p>\n
Metro<\/strong>\u00a0ventured to the country\u2019s Russian border last summer\u00a0after the Finnish\u00a0government\u00a0closed the eastern side of it following attempts by Russia to send an\u00a0influx of \u2018refugees\u2019 into the country.<\/p>\n
Joel Linnainm\u00e4ki, a research fellow on the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, told us\u00a0<\/strong>on the time that there had been little to report because the border closed \u2013 but added that the Finnish government continues to be wary of Russian movement nearby.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In Kamenka, around 35 miles from Finnish territory, some 130 installations able to housing 2,000 troops were arrange last yr.<\/p>\n
Finland has erected a 10-foot fence, topped with barbed wire, to line a big portion of its border with Russia and stop illegal crossings.<\/p>\n
