Run to the West is certainly one of the more odd Korean releases of the yr. Directed by Kang Yoon-sung of The Outlaws and Big Bet fame, the film runs a decent 60 minutes and ends on a deliberate cliffhanger. What Is Run To The West About?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The film Run to the West opens at a funeral. The deceased\u2019s two children, a daughter and her brother Jae-beom (Yang Se-jong), are gathering mourners. But almost no one on the funeral is who they seem like. Jae-beom is secretly a billionaire who built his fortune through illegal gambling operations within the Philippines. Jang-won (Byun Yo-han) is a National Intelligence Service officer working undercover to guard him. Scattered among the many other guests are criminals hunting Jae-beom and hired extras simply there to pad out the gang.<\/p>\n

The funeral is interrupted when a gaggle of hired thugs kidnaps Jae-beom, setting off a frantic automotive chase. The survivors from each cars get up at some place that appears like Seoul but is totally deserted, other than a gaggle of grim reapers with animal heads who’re actively hunting them.<\/p>\n

This in-between realm is an area where the film roots within the Buddhist concept of the intermediate state between death and rebirth. On this realm, a soul is claimed to wander through visions and trials for as much as 49 days before being reborn or passing on entirely. How Does Run To The West End?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Run to the West doesn\u2019t resolve its central mystery. The film ends abruptly, mid-chase, with the survivors still trapped within the in-between realm and a far greater threat looming. The closing moments tease the arrival of the \u201cKing of the Grim Reapers,\u201d a figure who is ready up as way more dangerous than the animal-headed hunters.<\/p>\n

Nobody escapes, nobody\u2019s fate is settled, and the larger mythology of this realm is left open. It’s unclear what the realm it actually wants with these specific people, and what happens if the King of the Grim Reapers catches as much as them.<\/p>\n

Why Does Run To The West End On A Cliffhanger?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Run to the West is explicitly billed as Part 1 of a bigger story that director Kang Yoon-sung says he conceived roughly 25 years ago. The movie was paused because of financial constraints until this AI-assisted production model made it financially viable. The ending is built to establish a continuation somewhat than deliver a conclusion.<\/p>\n
